    HOW-TO: (JB3 Interface)Download,Connect,Datalog,and Update Firmware.

Something i wanted to make since i get alot of Pm's with how to help connect and how to start datalogging. I also threw in how to help in downloaded the interface for first time and previous users and how to update the firmware.

Downloading the Jb3 interface for current users.
If you have a previous version of the Jb3 interface and now are updating to a new interface follow these directions for a cleaner install.
If this is your first time downloading the JB3 interface skip this step.
You are going to want to remove and delete the old interface and install a fresh new copy.
    Go to
    Start>
    Control panel>
    Programs and features>
Find the JB3 interface which is sometimes just listed as ‘JB3’
    JB3>
Then click change/uninstall prgram on the top of the window once you have slected the JB3 program/interface..
Follow the on screen insturctions which asks you if you would like to remove and uninstall this program click ‘OK’

To Install a clean and new copy or update of a Jb3 interface and for first time users:
Go here to download the latest interface, click on it and click save on the pop up window that will appear:
    http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showpo...59&postcount=1
I just save it to my desktop and then the download progresses.
Once the download is complete, go to your desktop on find the file. Double click the file and open its contents to see what is inside.
Click on the file “READ ME FIRST”
This contains some good information to get you started and how to do everything in the correct order aswell as how to download the drivers.
Once you have read the READ ME FIRST file and downloaded the drivers needed for the JB3 usb >
Double click the “Setup” file to begin downloading of the interface.
A Pop up window should display and just click “install”
That is it, the JB3 interface should pop up and you can get started on connecting it to your car and update firmware/datalog!

    Connecting to the Interface
Once you have downloaded the interface and the drivers, this is going to be the first time opening up the JB3 interface.
I wont be covering how to download the drivers since most computers vary on how its done, etc. But i will cover a general how to download the interface in the future.
Once the interface is opened, connect the USB to your computer. (Verify the USB is connected and the drivers for the USB are installed)
Insert your key fob and press the 'start/stop' button WITHOUT holding the brake. This you will put you in AUX mode and all the dash lights should turn on. The Jb3 will be active and on at this point aswell.

First thing you are going to want to do is set the 'COM PORT' to the correct setting, so the JB3 interface can connect to the USB/Jb3.
So go to the tab on the top named 'Settings'.
Here is two ways to find what 'COM PORT' you connected the JB3 USB to on your computer.
Once you connected the USB and your drivers are installed usually on windows the connection for the USB status will be in your toolbar. (Boxed in red in the picture below)
Double click this small icon on the bottom right to open the status window.

The USB connection status window should open up with a list of USB connections.
Boxed in red in the picture above is what you should be looking for to match and input in the JB3 interface 'COM PORT'.
In the picture for example, the USB status window shows
    "USB serial port (COM7)"
Take the number 7 and input it into the JB3 interface 'COM PORT' window.
To see if this is the correct 'COM PORT' number, click 'FILE' then 'CONNECT'

If you connected correctly and successfully, on the bottom of the interface next to 'STATUS' it will display Changed to Map X (Whichever map you are currecntly set on)

If you failed to connect, it will say here " FAILED" and surrounded by red.
NOTE: dont mind the speaker icon in the middle loll!

Here is another way, more precise way aswell, this also comes in the JB3 interface download file made by Terry.

Once you are connected. You can now datalog and update your firmware.

    DATA LOGGING
Once you are connected to the JB3 interface, click on the top tab labeled 'Logging'

As you can see there is a number of parameters under the logging window with a side tab 'ADD' next to each parameter. Clicking 'ADD' will chart/ADD the specific parameter to the datalogging, can be done before, during or even after you have finished datalogging so dont be worried about this unless you want to see at that specific time, the JB3 records all the parameters either way.
Here is more info on this and data logging, scroll down to "datalogging instructions":
    http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showpo...59&postcount=1

You can now start the car and looking at the logging window on the bottom next to 'RPM' parameter, check to make sure there are numbers moving in this box which represent RPM's of the motor currently. Test it by giving some throttle and making sure it responds to your inputs of throttle/rpm.
If everything is working correctly then you sir are ready for some data logging. :burnrubber:

This is not a how-to do datalogging exactly but how to initate and record it. Depending on your needs, you may need WOT full gear, multiple gears or etc. type of logging.

Once you are ready to record you can either press 'F1' to 'Start' the logging on your keyboard and 'F2' to "Stop and display ", or go to top Drop down menu, click 'Data Logging' and then click 'start' or 'stop and display'.

If you dont like a log you have done and want to do another one, just hit 'F1' button on your keyboard or click 'Start' to do another one.
Usually when you 'Stop and display' or 'F2' to stop your log, the status bar on the bottom left of the interface will display something like " Plotting point XXX of XXX"
To save the log for later viewing or use, Go back to the top of the interface click the drop down menu 'Data logging' and then click 'Export'

Here you can either 'Export' aka save it via JPG which is a direct view of the log as a graph/picture. Or a CSV which will use Excel to open and will list all your settings and alot more info than the JPG image.
Use the CSV for later viewing and your own in depth look and or to send to Terry for analysis. Use the JPG to post a log on the forum.

To Open a old Saved CSV log, Go back to the top of the interface click 'Data Logging' then click 'Open CSV', find and open your CSV file you would like to see and it will show up on the chart.
    You can see it here:

Note: the data log here is of a cold start.
Once done with everything you can shut the car off or leave it running and just go to the top of the interface click 'FILE' and click 'Disconnect' at anytime.
    You have completed logging. :happy
A major way to learn everything in the interface is to play around and take a look at all the menus in the interface, open them up and see what they say and or do.... Helped me alot Click here to enlarge

    EXTRA NOTES:
Just to add, if you are exploring the interface and just installed a new interface or updated. Under the top tab 'Methanol' If you are not running meth and or N2O, 255 might be the values in all these boxes you can change them to all to '0' to clean it up if you would like. Along with changing the 'Min' and 'Max' RPM values to 2000 and 7000 respectivly since the interface wont allow you to change it to '0', but no worries nothing is connected so it wont do anything.

If you are NOT using a Vent gauge map swtiching device you can also clean up another area.
Go to the top of the interface and click on the tab labeled 'User adjustment'
Then look for the 'Vent gauge map switching' on the top right of the window shown in the picture below. Within the inputs there will be the number 255 in each box, you can change them all to '0'.. This is if you are NOT using a external map switching device, if you are using a external map switching deivce like the RIX vent gauge, then set these to your own settings.

    For information sakes
Under the same window ('User adjustment') There is a section called 'Drivetrain' It is pretty self explanatory but for more info look here and scroll down to "Tuning setup"..
    http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showpo...59&postcount=1

For example i dont want any aids or extras on so i set them all to '0'. If you would like to play with these read the link i provided above for info how on and what they do.
Under the same window on the top left hand side there is the section called 'Custom tuning' This is if you are brave enough to begin some custom tuning settings, i dont recommened anyone try to play with this unless they know what they are doing and or contact Terry first.
THIS IS ONLY ACTIVE OR WORK IF YOU ARE ON MAP 1, IT DOESNT NOT EFFECT ANY OTHER MAP.
More info on what each setting does here under 'Tuning setup'
    http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showpo...59&postcount=1
The last section under this same window 'User adjustment' is 'Global/Boost control'.

These inputs should match the default values that are listed here; scroll down to see the window:
    http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showpo...64&postcount=2
These values sometimes change from interface/firmare updates, they usually carry over 'as is' but unless Terry posts new default settings you wont have to change these settings.

    UPDATE FIRMWARE:

First off, go to the latest firmware for 2.0 here:
    http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showpo...59&postcount=1
It is labeled as a .HEX file, usually at the bottom of the first post by Terry.
Click the .HEX file, a pop up window should come up and click save, save it to your desktop or where ever you would like or can find it easily.
Once you download this .HEX file, dont go and double click on it since it most likely wont open or do nothing. Your not suppose to double click it. Save it for later, KEEP READING>
Now go to your car and connect your computer to the JB3 USB and connect to the Interface, as this was already covered in part 1.
Once connected go to the top of the window in the Interface and click ‘FILE’ > ‘UPLOAD FIRMWARE’

This will pop up, follow the instructions and click ok:

Then a window will open to find the .HEX file to where you saved it in your computer.
Once you found the HEX file, click it.
On the bottom the JB3 interface window, the status bar, it should say ‘LOADING HEX’ then proceed to ‘WRITING BLOCK XXX/XXX’

This means its downloading it into the JB3.
Wait until it finishes and then the Inteface status bar on the bottom left should show 'CHANGED TO MAP X (your current map)' This means it is complete and the firmware upload was sucessful. Start your car to verify everything is in working order and you are done. :burnrubber:

To see your current firmware and Interface version and to make sure it is right:
go to the tab on the interface labeled 'User adjustment' and look for on the right side ' Informational / Read only' under this should have a 'firmware ver' and a 'Interface ver'

If you run into a prompt like this

Go to the tab on the top of the interface labeled 'Settings' go down to where it says 'UPLOAD TIMEOUT' and change the number in the box to a number that is higher, usually 10 works.
The prompt says to restarted your computer, but just disconnect using 'FILE' drop down menu on the top of the interface and click 'DISCONNECT' and exit the interface, re-open the interface 'FILE'> 'CONNECT' and re-try to upload the firmare the same way ( this time the ' UPLOAD TIEMOUT is set to 10 comapred to the lower number it was)
If that does not work, restarted the computer and try this over again.
