    M-cars compared - lap times

Autobild found M5 to be quickest followed by 1M in the second place and M3 being third. SAVs were the slowest.

    Link?

    Is this the new M3?

How can they compare the new M5 and 1M vs. an old M3?

It is the e9x M3...actually all three! The interesting thing is seeing the e60 M5 getting its ass kicked by everyone.

Those are all ongoing models. You can say M3 is a bit outdated, but on the other hand the technology of 1M is older. the suspension is the same as M3, but the engine N54 is older than that of M3. 1M is just a better package.

Post Autobild M Car Sachsenring Mega Test

If you're a BMW M fan, German print magazine Autobild has put together the mother of all comparisons. Autobild has taken all current BMW M models and set them all against each other on the Sachsenring in Germany. Called "Fascination M" the comparo reconfirms the obvious while uncovering a few surprises.
Starting with the obvious, the M3 CRT (E90) is the fastest M Car Autobild has ever tested on the Sachsenring. But vaguely surprising was that the new M5 (F10) in all of its heft was only three hundredths of a second slower, but two seconds faster than the 1M coupe (E82) in third place.
In a surprising fourth place is the M3 coupe (E92) which beat out the M3 sedan (E90) by one tenth of a second.
The M3 convertible (E93) was just over two seconds slower than the sedan while the X6M and X5M (E70) were only one tenth apart. However, in another surprising twist, both SAVs outperformed the previous generation M5 (E60) - yes, by a fraction of a second but nonetheless, they were faster.
Check out the times in the chart below. It should be noted that the M3 GTS (E92) which tops them all is not counted because it is no longer available.
For further comparison, Autobild included times for the Porsche Panamera Turbo S and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG with performance package.

    Autobild Shootout Sachsenring lap time
    BMW M3 GTS (on semi-slicks) 1:37.30
    BMW M3 CRT 1:38.87
BMW F10 M5 (driven by Claudia Hürtgen. Other cars were driven by Autobild drivers) 1:38.90
    BMW 1M Coupe 1:40.18
    BMW M3 Coupe DCT 1:40.52
    BMW M3 Sedan DCT 1:40.60
    BMW M3 Convertible DCT 1:42.63
    BMW X6 M 1:43.67
    BMW X5 M 1:43.72
    BMW E60 M5 1:43.77

F10 M5 Competition Sachsenring lap time
    Porsche Panamera Turbo S 1:38.13
    BMW F10 M5 1:38.90
    Mercedes E63 AMG PP 1:40.59

    So there you go.
The M3 with all his power is a slow troll in comparisen to a 1M Click here to enlarge Click here to enlarge

What this actually shows is how important a professional racing driver truely is, if the M5 can score so good in this lineup.
These numbers do not mean a lot if all cars are driven by different drivers.

This shows again that the E9x M3 is just a fat pig. Hopefully M Gmbh will get back to the spirit of the E46 CSL (which would be as fast, if not faster than the GTS in this lineup) and shave some lbs off the next model. Only adding more and more HP isn't how things should be done on a performance car.

I wonder what the e46 would have hit. I'm sure it would be up there next to the 1M

The E9X M3 is only slightly heavier than the E46 M3 and the GTS is pretty light.

Autobild compares lap times of recent M cars - X5 and X5M outlap the E60 M5

This is a very interesting comparison of all the current M cars by Autobild with an E60 M5 thrown in for good measure. The result is somewhat surprising in the sense that the new F10 M5 (which is quite heavy) manages to outlap a DCT E92 M3 on the Sachsenring in Germany. The X5M and X6M also outlap the the E60 M5 which certainly is impressive. The M3 GTS and M3 CRT naturally were the quickest around the track being lighter and more powerful models created with the track in mind. And yes, the 1M lapped the course slightly quicker than the E92 M3.

    Laptimes:

    1:37.30 - M3 GTS on Semi-slick tires (€115,000 or about $148,000)
    1:38.87 - M3 CRT (€130,000 or about $168,000)
    1:38.90 - F10 M5 driven by Claudia Hurtgen (~$95,000)
    1:40.18 - 1M Coupe ($46,135)
    1:40.52 - M3 Coupe with DCT ($59,900)
    1:40.60 - M3 Sedan with DCT ($55,900)
    1:42.63 - M3 Convertible with DCT ($68,550)
    1:43.67 - X6 M ($90,000)
    1:43.72 - X5 M ($86,900)
    1:43.77 - E60 M5 ($85,700)

The fact that the 1m is slower in a straight line tells that it is beating the M3 in the turns nicely

This test is good since it shows that the 1M is faster than a E9x M3 when the two major differences are the MT vs DCT and the N54 vs the S65 (the cars shares chassis bits). So if the DCT is better than a MT then this must be an epic win for a 340hp N54 vs the 420hp S65 Click here to enlarge

bull$#@!. the e60M5 traps over 116. the x5M traps under 114. no way that 5000lb car is going to outlap a car with improved power/weight and a thousand pounds less. I think that they forgot to note that some of it was a wet track. On a wet track, I believe it.

Good to have this in the first page. Sticky not bashing the 1M this time could hopefully lead to us all forgetting the already extremely boring M3 vs 1M fight.

It may indicate a tight track but yes, hard to believe and or accept.

I wonder if sticky can still sleep quietly these days after this humiliating defeat of his beloved S65 vs just a "factory tuned" N54 Click here to enlarge
