    335d/X5 35D tunes

As enthusiasts, we all want to enjoy our cars, and in many cases, get the most out of them. Since the BMW diesels are new to the states, there are limited options for the vehicles. Thankfully, though, there are 3 (that I'm aware of) that provide an opportunity give our diesels a boost.

    VAC
They advertise gains of 30+ WHP - 50+ft/lbs with VAC module as tested on US spec 335d for a price of $599.

These appear to be before and after gains:

    DTUK
    They offer 2 options:

    DTUK® CRD2® Multimap Power System @ ~$435 USD
    DTUK® CRD-T - Multi-Channel Common Rail and Turbo Boost System @ ~$490 USD

The first option is advertised as available for most Common Rail diesel engines and improves power and torque by upto 40%.

Their second option provides a bit more control and connects to the turbo boost sensor, providing more finite precision. They also state some interesting gains (at least on the EU models):

No results on a US spec car..yet.

    BMS
Finally, and most importantly, is the tune offered by a company many of us know pretty well, and that's BMS (known for other products, such as JB+ and JB3). Terry has worked up what he calls a JBD. This is currently in its prototype stages, but he does have some pretty compelling #'s for HP gains (the dyno that the car was run on was not able to pull torque #'s from the OBDII):

Terry has stated that the expected price for the JBD will be $279. Any questions regarding the JBD should be posted in this thread:

    That's it for now.

    $279? Incredible.

An increase of 60 whp on a diesel is no joke. The torque numbers must be insane.

It seems BMS is the only the US option thus far, or at least it will be, is that correct?

I wonder if Bully Dog or Gale Banks will ever offer anything for the BMW diesels. I know Bully Dogg has a unit for the Mercedes Diesels. Banks is working on VW diesels.

I know of a couple of people that have the VAC module on US diesels, but I'm unaware of anyone with the DTUK tune...yet. I'm talking with Andrew right now to see if I can arrange some time to evaluate one, and to compare it to the JBD. I hope that pans out, so that the diesel community at large has something to compare to (I have the ability to maintain an objective point of view).

If the 5 series diesel does make it to the states (hoping the 535d, personally), that means BMW has bitten, and that will bode well for us as a collective.

Regarding the torque numbers, maybe we can fins that out next month at the dyno comparison. Click here to enlarge

If you could get it before the dyno day that would be great... you could show both.

We'll see what he's got to say, and perhaps I can get somehing from VAC, too. I'd like some time with all of them, especially with the DTUK modules, since it allows for some boost control, too. I already know what the JBD can do....time to see what the other ones have in them.

That would be fantastic if it can be pulled off. Keep me updated, I would like to see what the others can do on the same dyno as well.

Will do. I'll try and get VAC on the horn starting tomorrow. Andrew in previous communications has been very personable and informative, so I think he'll be receptive. I have NO idea who to contact at VAC....yet. Tomorrow morning's task. Click here to enlarge

Only reason I didn't like diesels was the low RPM band...but I might be changing my mind in the future...

But they have power everywhere which is very, very cool.

The only downside is that they make so much more torque than the HP. Some more revs to harness all that torque would be incredible.

Not the way diesels work, unfortunately. And the people that are addicted to a high revving RPM gauge need to understand that it's not necessary to have a whole hell of a lot of fun.

That is true, but some more RPM would make these things far stronger on the top end.

Ok, where are the torque numbers on the JBD?

I got to drive a X5d with the JBD all last week. It felt great, it was set at 85%.

Good question but I don't think we have exact numbers as the JBD is not officially out yet.

I would have figured by now Terry or a beta tester would have some torque numbers by now.

I guess we will get them at the BB dyno day.

I think Ronin has some numbers he can share regarding the torque, he'll post when he sees this.

Only HP #'s right now. I might have some numbers in a week or so, though....depends if Jeremy is willing to pull them when I'm there. Click here to enlarge My best guess is that based on the 25% increase in HP, a similar expectation should be allowed for torque. The only problem is, we don't know what the stock torque figure is. But, if we take a look at the stated BMW HP # (265) and what the car actually did (245), that's an 8.5% difference. 8.5% of 425 is 36, so 389 to the wheels. Now, take 25% of 389, and we get 97. Tack that on to the 389, and you have 486...to the wheels (or 531 at the crank).

Now, that's conjecture and speculation....but I'm betting it's probably not that far off.

You can figure the torque from the hp figures, not a problem, just a simple equation.

Well, according to this nifty calculator:

    http://www.dragtimes.com/horsepower-...lculate+Torque

and some videos I've already posted up, it looks like that the car is producing 450 lb/ft of torque.

    Seems low to me.
