Got a few PM's asking how dumping Wastegates to Atmosphere makes more power, so I will write a little post later. Just got up.

Venting to atmo keeps mass flow in the exhaust pipe minimal.

Also keeps from two gas streams interfering with eachother which is better for internal flow characteristics. Two streams hitting eachother even at 45 degree angles still shows signs of momentum loss and expansion loss.

You want flow to become fully developed as soon as possible.

There's a few other reasons, I'll let unfor unleash them.

Would you say this is true for N54s running DVs or even forged DVs?

The only drawback is how unbelievably loud screamer pipes are. It's like the devil himself is coming out of the engine bay when on the dyno. There is zero chance of hearing knock with open dump setups.

Dark, I believe unfor was talking about dumping wastegates to atmo, not DV/compressor recirc Click here to enlarge

Boom, open wastegates are like the screams of 1000 flaming gorillas. There are people that put mufflers on wastegate dumps because they are that loud.

Wooooow!!!! I am so excited to see this car come together. Twin wastegates are so badass. Click here to enlarge

Will you recirc the wastegates, or run an open dump?

Just out of curiosity, why are some complaining about the twin wastegates (not here) ? I am not familiar with such a setup, but it is being said that this will be extremely loud, is that correct?

Wastegate to atmo is the way to go. It's not loud until boosting to the max and letting the excess gases out through the wastegate. Not something you do when starting the engine or cooling down the engine coming back home. So your neighbors don't even notice it.

    Sticky,
It's not that dual wastegates are loud. What is loud is dumping the wastegate gas into the atmosphere. Its so loud in fact that some weld motorcycle resonators on the dump tube to counteract the sound. However, you gain horsepower.
In most tests, you gain anywhere from 20 to 40 rwhp dumping to the atmosphere. That little bit matters to me.

Dumping wastegates to to atmosphere does make more power due to the decrease in backpressure in the exhaust system as well as the decrease in aerodynamic tumble. Although, you do have to be careful when it comes to tuning since the loud tone can cause the knock sensor to pick up false knock noise. This holds especially true to newer vehicles that have much more complex and sensitive knock control systems. The way we usually do it on newer cars is to tune them with the wastegates dumping back in to the dp's first to monitor the correct knock values. Once you're done tuning and are aware that the map is safe, then you can covert the WG's to dump to the atmosphere safely knowing what the base knock values should look like. If the knock values increase when dumping to the atmosphere, you can be sure that it's not a timing issue and more so a noise interference issue.

We just did this on a GTR we upgraded turbos on. Initially it had external WG's dumping back in the dp's and the knock values were well within stock safe range after tuning. We then made dump tubes and blocked off the dp's, sure enough the noise triggered the knock control to see much higher values than before. We know this was attributed to the fact that the WG's now dumped to the atmosphere, since we had already completed our tuning before with no knock and also because we are familiar with what the timing values should be at to keep from triggering knock. Luckily with the tuning software we use for the GTR we can program it to disregard the higher knock value by rescaling ignition timing correction for knock raw. Of course you will have to re-tune a bit to accomidate for the increased power, but that's pretty simplistic to do if you're a tuner that is familiar with the application.
