this is pretty ridiculous as many have stated. it reminds me of the mk.5 gti (my buddy's got one), they have what's called a 'noise pipe', which is basically a giant boost leak that channels the air into the cabin to give it more of a turbo sound. according to him, this can be deleted by modifying it/swapping it to a tiguan pipe, which has no air channeled into the cabin (through the a/c vents). $#@!ing pathetic. i agree with sticky, if they want it to sound louder than it is, make a cut-off valve. they probably didn't go that route due to emissions lol.

I'm $#@!ing speechless. WTF!!!! This almost sounds like a joke. How can they do this to an M car? Just insane. I would be ashamed to have such feature in a car like the M5, or any M car for that matter. Ricer $#@!.....

soon they will have a menu of different engine sound you can choose from inside the cabin, and the car will actually only have a 20 hp electric motor. This will be our future.

It can sound like whatever you want, now that we have this new amazing feature.

I actually want my engine to play "Michael Jackson - I'm Bad" when I go WOT.

EDIT: And when Vanos kicks in I get rick rolled and Rick Astley starts to play... LOL OWNED.

Someone needs to hack the coding/sound file and change it to fart noises.I would not buy an M5 unless this could be disabled and/or I already knew how to code it out.

I can't believe they would do this on an M car--so stupid.

Allowing more of the engine's natural engine note to bypass the sound dampening and enter the cabin where I can enjoy it is fine. It's better than fine, it's a pretty sweet idea. I've got a few buddies with MkV and VI GTIs and I've driven a couple of the new Mustang 5.0s and basically you can hear the engine more clearly while having a car that has less tire and road noise during daily use.

Having the speakers fake the engine noise is completely retarded, and it's not a microphone amplifying the real noise as some have thought, the press release clearly indicates that this is software trying to figure out what the car should sound like based on how you're driving and then cueing up sound samples.

Check this out, when they tested the system in a Mini they offered 4 sound modes to make your engine sound like 4 different motors. No, I'm not making this $#@! up:

In all honesty i think the new m5 is so quiet and smooth with alot of sounding detonation around the cabin. I think BMW did this was to give there customers a grin because of how the sound control mimics the exhaust for probably good reasons. 90% of the people that not afford this car. So the typical buyer of an m5 is probably elderly men and doesnt want a loud exhuast and BMW came up with the next best thing. Also, what if you have clients riding with you while you are discussing future business plans and such. In this case just turn off the engine noise option and you have a refined, civilized, luxory car that I can take my investors around as well. After your business is complete turn that sound audio on and go have some fun with it. But I do agree being 27 years old Im definently putting exhaust on my new one that should be here pretty soon. I cant wait to take delivery of this monster!!!

This is not the best thing next to a loud exhaust because this is synthetic. It is not the real motor sound. IT IS FAKE, CREATED, SYNTHESIZED.

What if you do have clients riding around with you? They want to sit there and discuss markets or why how $#@!ing awesome your V8 is? All I know is people who rode in my car don't want to suddenly talk about the Nikkei.

Ok, fine, I'll give it to you then. Say you have elderly clients with impeccable hearing who get bothered by anything loud that they do not understand. How about an exhaust cut-out? A switch that makes the natural sound louder basically? At least fill the cabin as God intended, with the rumble of an exhaust and not video game sounds.
