    Cool BMW E34 1990 - M30 DINOSAUR TURBO + N2O

So... i got a near-MINT E34... very clean on the outside, NO RUST !

Some genius tried to paint the chrome, satin black without sanding down, so all the paint has started to chip on it...

I just pressure washed that off and am going to have a shop paint it satin black for me...

    I already have H&R/Bilstein/AC-Schnitzer suspension..

While the M30 is being built, the car has a M20B20 in it, and the only good thing about that is that it gets good mileage :')

I'm was speculating on the turbo options, i had three turbos in stock...

    These were a Holset HX35 from a 5.9 Cummins 6BT, a Holset HX52 from a FL12 VOLVO and a Holset H1C that came from a 14L SCANIA truck...

I decided on the HX35, since it has a 16cm2 exaust housing, A/R being 1.20

    Shopping list:
ARP & RaceWare - Performance Head Stud Kit M30 - CHECK
VAC - M30 MLS Gasket .080 Cylinder Bore up to 93mm - CHECK
Siemens Deka IV 80lb/hr 830cc injectors -CHECK
TiAL Sport Q Blow Off Valve -CHECK
    TiAL Sport 46mm Wastegate -CHECK
Wasted Spark Coil from Opel Vectra V6 - CHECK
    Holset HX35 A/R 1.20 - CHECK
    Custom Exhaust Manifold - CHECK
    VEMS standalone - 1000$
    VAC - M10 / M30 High Performance Valve Guide - 10$
    VAC - 8mm Hardened Valve Locks / Keepers - 6$
    CP Pistons - M30 Custom bore 8.5:1 (For Turbo) - 1100$

Wish to buy (and probably will later):
    VAC - M30 High Performance Valve Springs - 335$
    VAC - M30 Titanium Valve Retainers (8mm) - 220$
    VAC - M30 Billet Rocker Arms, Set of 12 - 1800$
    Racing Dynamics - E34 Anti-Roll Sway Bar Kit - 510$

The head has been stripped off the M30B35....

Unfortunately it has High Compression pistons..

First plans were to use other pistons, i called a friend and he had some dished pistons for me...

Piston rings cost about 900$, so i might aswell put in an extra 200$ and buy CP forged pistons with rings...

I've decided to paint it in Yellow (Ferrari Giallo 102) but paint the top and hood Black (Schwarz II)

You have a 10 minute time limit to edit.

Actually, its better to have you make a supplemental as that bumps the thread up to catch more attention.

Thanks for posting the pics, nice ride. Now how about the motor build pics!

because they are high compression pistons from a M30B35 out of a E24 635CSi...

i beleive they are 10-10.5:1 CR

Well now, we're looking at some progress....

Customs stopped hazzling me, content list for my shipment said it included CP pistons but there was no receipt for them and when i finally received the package CP pistons were missing, so i got reimbursed for that... and i am thinking about just going the OEM route rather than dealing with this bull$#@! again..

but the car was prepped for the M30, Manual Transmission pedal assembly was installed and i will start the build of the motor hopefully next week, but if not then i will do it soon after christmas...

B35 pistons are 9:1...if they were flat-top pistons then they would be 10:1 or more.

I used to want to spin my motor to 8k but the head just does not have the flow in it to support that kind of RPM, boost or not. I ran a few emails back and forth with Paul Burke and it will take more money than a legit bottom end build (like manley rods, JE pistons etc) and turbo setup put together...reworking the cylinder heads to the point of reworking the aluminum (welding in new aluminum in the chamber to reshape it), because beyond a certain limit they kind of max out, and because the poor design it can actually increase the chances of detonation.

Your best bet is to keep it to 7000, build the head with some mild port work, stuff it with goodies and a 666 Fabrication manifold, and call it a day. You will get a massive amount of power out of this setup (500+ on a stock bottom end daily driven the piss out of it for over a year before it finally blew the headgasket) without any reliability problems of spinning it high..

I will simply take the OEM pistons from a 93 735i and work them down to this:

That way compression would be lowered to 8.3:1

Should be safer that way... i will also install E23 745i oil squirters...

Customs were hazzling me over the content list of the package i ordered, receipt for the pistons was missing and they decided to estimate it...

Then when i got the package, pistons were missing... but i was reimbursed both by seller and customs Click here to enlarge so all is good Click here to enlarge

Well how much boost do you want to run? A regular B35 piston at 9:1 is more than enough, you could always do B34 and run it at 8:1 Click here to enlarge

The real issue you will have with the B35 block is it tends to crack around the headstud holes when subjected to high power (from what Ive read). A B34 is much more suited to boost, for some reason there is a whole lot less issues with strapping a turbo to it.

    I do actually have a B34 block from a 635CSi...

The motor is a high compression M30B34... i will use M30B35 internals (crank, rods & modified pistons) use studs and probably have the head welded around the water jackets...

I have done some research and a friend of mine is going to port and polish the head for me, i will run the HX35 with an external wastegate @ 18psi...

That should give me a pretty responsive curve and a good pull from the basement up... the HX35 i have is a AR 1.16 if i am not mistaken...

I do also have a HX52 that i originally intended for this purpose, but i guess i will use that for my Chevy GMT800 / Cummins swap (that the HX35 came off)...

It will probably ruin the tow capabilities of my rig... but i'm not sure a HX52 will spool all that good on a "3.5" (actually is 3.4) liter engine that only does around 6500rpm... (i think it is 1.40 AR)

I'm almost set, just waiting ti'll i have enough money for these rockers and the VEMS... (refund on the pistons went into the paintjob fund, you guys will love this)

So, i'm still rolling around with the M20 in place, but i had it manual transmission converted... so it's a bit better than it was...

I guess i will just have to see how far i will get on the "modified" 9:1 pistons... worst case scenario i have a extra M30B35 block so i will then build that with forged internals later...

What do you think about running a 3.15 differential with the M30 dogleg short ratio box ?? sound about perfect ?? i was thinking about maybe swapping the dogleg for a regular G265... will that maybe extend the gears too much ?

Anyhow... project is rolling and i guess i will just have the M20 in it until i finish preparing the body for all the good stuff that is coming Click here to enlarge

The dogleg box Ive read isnt the strongest box in out of the family. 3.15 gears are ok but Id do 2.73s, you will get some serious mph out of the trans. I have an 85, they came with the 265/5 boxes, and are swappable with E30 M3 cases. I almost had one to put in but the guy ended up keeping it after doing a dogleg swap.

I might just rebuild mine but it will end up costing over 2k...mine sounds like a WRC car, whines in every gear lol

An hx35 should spool ok, being an AR of over 1 and with a 16cm housing, in the lower gears it prolly wont spool til 4k. There are a few youtube videos. Get the car up in the higher gears and it will pick up pretty well.

Nothing beats an HX35 from Bullseye turbos though...they convert them to car use, with smaller turbine housings and revised turbines. Friend had one on his mitsubishi and on a 2L it spooled at 2400...made like 490whp.

yeah, it is also my understanding that the 265/5 box is a bit weaker than the 265/6...

BUT, then i also have a 4gear 262 box... wich might also work (i was told this is in reality the strongest box)... with a 3.15 diff...

i would of course like it if i had a 6gear 280 (was it named 285?) box...
