    Load targeting vs. boost targeting

Someone emailed this link to me which I got a kick out of. As most know the main piggybacks use boost targeting these days, while the flash tunes use load targeting. It seems the primary flash tuner is finally seeing the light. At least for their Mazda calibrations. Click here to enlarge

This “Boost Tuning” strategy allows for much more consistent boost control for a more linear and consistent boost curve which means improved power delivery for your MAZDASPEED vehicle. Boost Tuning on the OEM ECU is ONLY available on the COBB Tuning AccessPORT.

Interesting, I wonder if they are re-thinking their approach for the N54?

That is exactly what I was going to ask.

As far as I remember they were saying that they have taken or are taking measures to enable more load when the boost is low and similarly, cap the boost even if the load is not met. So yes, they are on that way.

The tune still targets load, but has boost caps. All the stage 2 logs ive seen run identical boost pressures. Hell I can post a boost trace btwn me and dzenno, its identical.

I think eventually they can target actual MAP... similar to other platforms which give the option to use MAF or MAP. Change, add, remove the reference tables.

Maybe it has something to do with cobb going stg 2? Just guessing....I've been anxious to see their stg 2 flash.

Yes, true, but these guys have experience on other platforms and are a large tuning firm. Kind of interesting to see.

Is it even officially out yet? Plus, you have GIAC stage 2 so why move?

Shiv has experience on other tune platforms as well. Its what can be put out and it always gets improved/changed as time passes. Cobb came out wiht the same logging parameters as the rest, now their logging capabilites are by far the best on the market. No other tune comes even close to it. Once stage 2 drops, cobb is pretty much done. They will release ATR to let the end use change whatever they want and move onto something else. Once that happens I got a feeling Terry/Shiv will be hurting

Sticky I am not sure what your exp is with cobb, but like I said, once ATR comes out, unless openecu hits this market, the platform is conquered.

Stage 2 is not out to the public. However many members along myself have been running it for some time now. According to that virtual dyno tool that I found and dzenno made popular I am a hair under 400whp on pump gas.

Cobbs stg2 is not out yet, but i would only move bc you can flash at home with the Cobb vs going to a dealer for the giac. In the two years I've had giac ive only had to get reflashed once when BMW wrote over the flash , so its not really a big deal.

Surprised GIAC won't release a flash loader then like they have on other platforms.

I do not have much experience with COBB. I just have read a lot about this seemingly never coming to fruition Stage 2. No idea what the ATR is.

ATR is end user software that lets the end user or pro, tune their personal car.

Is the software locked or can anyone fool around with it? I would assume there is some kind of function to protect novices?

They don't have a flash loader for other platforms, only a handheld map changer. I have it, but "stock" is only a giac stock-like map. Cobb will return the car to stock and uninstall the flash completely.

I asked if Giac was coming out with a handheld flashing device, they told me their maps are to complex to "fit" on a handheld device, and they change more parameters than other tuners. I have no idea if this is true but that's what I was told.

Anyone can fool around with it as long as you have an ap. The function to protect from novices is calling a pro tuner to do it for you. You can and will $#@! up your engine if you don't know basic tuning pricipals

I like it, they still have to figure out how to make it more linear, but that is being worked on now.
No idea when its coming out to the public, but it should be very soon

Ah, I see. How are they changing maps without flashing or does it work like a piggy in those situations?

This sounds like a load of crap. Their maps are too "complex" for a handheld device? Please.

Laloosh, Is Cobb trying to work an integrated meth solution that they could work into a stage 3 type tune?

Eh that's what they told me, yet maps are smooth as butter and are ran by numerous BMW race teams and countless Porsche race teams. Who knows, hopefully Cobb will pressure them to improve the product and come out with a handheld true flashing device.
