    Diesel juice??

I know there is a procedure for draining and refilling the urea tank, but I have a super busy week coming up and only 300 miles until no start!

Is there any reason I can't just add some on my own? Could this really cause issues?

    Thanks!!

Good question as I have no idea.

@Ronin might have the answer to this.

Well, I did a bit of research, the DEF is standardized like gasoline, so I went to autozone and bought 2.5 gallons for 11 bucks. I added it and voila! No more issues.

Someone needs to make a screw on funnel or something to simplify.

It smells like dirty cat litter.

Well, guess UREA is an appropriate name then. Glad you figured this out quickly and answered the question for other people, nicely done.

As you've found out, it can be done yourself, but why do it if the car is under maintenance? It costs you nothing, it takes them under an hour, you should get a loaner if you drop your car off (no matter how busy you are), and it can be an absolute PITA to fill it up on your own (even the dealership can screw it up...I know, I have pictures when they did on mine). Also, if you do the research, you'll find that there is an aftermarket part for the fill tank so that you don't have to worry so much about the mess. You are absolutely right! Long story, but I procrastinated about making an appointment and there were no loaners available. I could have taken the bus or figured a way to get a lift and drive my 911 for the day, but it was a pain.

So all the sudden I was looking at 2xx miles until no start and it was a challenge, so..,.....

Besides, we are talking about 11 dollars spent!

Sure! Long and short of it- BMW sells the diesel exhaust fluid (and MB sells their AdBlue) for a premium (30 dollars per gallon), the stuff is standardized like gasoline meaning you can use DEF from anyone and it should work the same. In the states, we have tons of diesel pickups that are using DEF and big rigs are starting to as well. So, instead of buying from the dealer, you can go to a truckstop or a parts store and buy it much more cheaply. I purchased 2.5 gallons for 11 bucks. I went to autozone, but truckstops should have it also.

There is a cover on the drivers side bumper, you pop that off and top off the tank. It is a screw on adapapter, I didn't use it but I will buy one from bavauto to make the job easier once I am out of warranty.

    Hope that helps!

It's the level of Nitrogen that makes the difference. I don't believe human urine has enough to do the job, plus I think there are other additives involved, as well.

    Ronin,

Do you know where to get the aftermarket fill tank adapter? I am nearly out of warranty and have not been able to find it. I called BAVauto, they don't know of it.

Thought he just asked on the forum, didn't know he PM'd you. Regardless, thanks.

Can we get a public response as well though to serve as a reference?
