In for info as it would be helpful to the community to see where a weakness in the motor may be.

With OB I know something broke last week but I haven't heard from him as to what yet. He hasn't had a chance to tear it down and inspect the parts. He's been running a stock short block though. He happened to be logging at the time and everything looked pretty normal for the car. I believe he was off the bottle using a race gas mix and meth when it broke. If it turns out to be a piston I know he has some lower CR forged pistons he's been waiting for. Hopefully he lucks out and its just a head gasket. Either way it really looks like Alpina got it right with the piston swap for higher power levels.

Yeah, an intake valve kissed the piston during an accidental burn out box over rev.

Our trusty PID tuner az335iat. It took a little chip out of the valve relief on the piston but car ran fine, wasn't smoking, etc. Aside from the occasional misfire at idle after. We were both surprised to see the piston chip missing when he took the head off. I suggested the budget fix of just throwing a new valve in it and polishing the piston top a bit but he choose to fix it the right way with a 2nd hand shortblock.

Just curious but what is an average cost for a short block and where do you source them?

Let me be the first to thank Terry for being so up front and drama free with the information on the down engines. It is both appreciated and respected

Terry, the occasional misfire at idle, was it substantial enough to throw a code? how would you best describe the severity of the misfire?

After the burn out incident the car would misfire at idle and normally throw a misfire fault. A year or two ago we had a customer float an intake valve and explode his intake manifold like a firecracker. So I suppose it could have been worse. Click here to enlarge

Terry, after restarting the car would it continue with the occasional misfire, was his car a standard transmission,if it was a automatic would you still be able to over rev it?

IIRC it went back to normal for awhile and then returned if you cleared the code. He's an auto. I think what happened was mid burnout the motor started loading down, car rolled forward a bit, tires hit more water and broke loose, and the momentum of everything carried the revs up well over 7200rpm, and then it started misfiring. I've actually done the same thing a few times with our 135i but haven't floated a valve yet. I'll definitely be more careful next time out.

Drama isn't really my style. At OB's power levels it's never been a matter of if something will break but when. It's just part of racing. I'm looking forward to confirming my suspicions when I get a chance to inspect whatever parts failed and helping him build it stronger.

Sucks that it happened but it eventually will as limits are pushed...i'll be taking the valve cover and cams off in the next week or two to see if there's any obvious issues in/around the valves as to why cyl 5 might be intermittently misfiring...the only thing that'd suck is being unable to build it stronger when/if you find the issues so the same problem doesn't reoccur...

I'm confused. Are we talking about Old Booster or az335iat? Does he have a different screen name on this board?

OB started smoking a lot more than it normally did a couple weeks ago. Could be a head gasket, piston, turbo, all three, etc. He hasn't been able to tear it down and check yet.

There is NO reason it couldn't be made stronger. Click here to enlarge

Oh for sure, just saying when options aren't available...look at the 6MT gear box...can't be rebuilt as parts aren't sold to rebuild them
