IPT N54 / 335 steptronic transmission upgrade pricing

they gave me some quotes on builds and charges ect, i asked a few more questions. i just cant fathom the $7800 charge they are currently asking:

    Pricing would be as follows:

This would be for having the valve body and torque converter work done..

    1) IPT Performance valve body upgrades/modifications. $735
    2) IPT Performance torque converter rework/restall. $729
    3) New transmission fluid. $225
    4) Labor remove & reinstall valve body & torque converter. $990

    TOTAL $2679

This would be for having the full transmission rebuild (which includes the valve body upgrades/modifications) and torque converter.

    1) IPT Performance FULL transmission build. $5950
    2) IPT Performance torque converter rework/restall. $729
    3) New transmission fluid. $225
    4) Labor to remove & reinstall the transmission & torque converter. $990

    TOTAL $7894

they offer a "Rebuild Kit" as well, retails for $840, so I asked whats the difference between the fully built trans and the rebuild kit, and asked for a price of the rebuild kit +TQ convertor and valvebody upgrade installed "out-the-door"

I think its overkill really. They need to offer a street/mild kit, and a race kit. Im sure they would sell 3x as many mild kits as the will race

Yes, but are they planning doing that?

We haven't even seen them successfully do one of these transmissions yet...

Yeaaaa....looks like the first 4 you listed are what we want. What are they doing in the full build to justify that price....stronger material and cryo treated everything? Maybe some of those high speed race car coatings that cost a fortune?
Never thought I would see the day...

That is insane dude, might as well do a tranny swap Auto to MT. A lot cheaper to make the MT handle big power.

what a ridiculous price, for that money you can build a glide to handle 2500 HP.

What does 'reworking valvebody' mean? Some bull$#@! they drill out holes to open up some valve pressure? Give me a break, I want to see a breakdown of the entire process of this modification.

How strong is the stock converter and is it the same that is used in the xi as the regular RWD? I'd really like to have mine restalled to around 3600. My car would rip out the hole really nicely then and still be rather streetable.

As for the trans rebuild have you ever thought about checking with some of the big trans builders like Finish Line Transmission out of Chicago area? Reason I bring it up is that I'm running a built 4l60e in my fbody and they do really good work. I had talked with a guy there and he said he can rebuild any transmission to be stronger. They have such a good reputation in the fbody world where cars like mine see 700whp.

The stock AT is pretty stout already, I havent heard of a single failure except for maybe one that was on nitrous and FBO and doing crazy $#@!.

Yea...the only parts that have shown weakness are in relation to shifting at high power....so torque converter and line pressure/valve body...there actually hasn't really been any "weakness" discovered even at the highest power levels. (barring peps doing stupid $#@! of course)

I see zero justification for the 8000k price tag, if this transmission cant handle at least 1000 hp after this mod then it's BMW tax and R&D recovery costs only.

No chance in hell I would pay nearly $8k to build a transmission unless it was going on a dedicated race car that produced 1000+whp/wtq. I say you give the first section of upgrades a shot and see where that gets you..... but I'm sure you've already decided on that route Click here to enlarge

I dont think people realize what kind of transmission 8k can buy you. You can literally run 7s with a trans built for 8k.

    Yep.

What in the world goes into that trans that costs $8k?

They called me today while i was interviewing with the Air Marshals, this is the email I came home to:
    "
    Steven,
The rebuild kit is just one of the things needed when rebuilding a transmission,we can not just install the rebuild,we also rebuild the pump, perform all the valve body work, cryo the internal,re-heat other pieces, machine the case, all these things are whats needed for a performance build of the transmission, that's what the $5950 represents.we sell rebuild kits incase a shop wants better than stock parts or someone wants to try their hand at building the transmission there self.

    Thanks,"

So im gonne respond and tell them i dont feel we need a "fully built" trans just yet. So as of right now im gonna tell them i just want to rebuild it using their kit, and add tq convertor and valvebody. should sit right around $4k total. Comparitively I can do that.

We still dont know exactly what failed/failing in mine, so openeing it up can give us answers

I mean, yea, its some $$$ considering i paid $450 for a rebuild kit rated to 800HP for the Lightning, $600 for tq convertor and $1200 for total R&R labor, I cn live with $4k.

Ill let you know how it goes.

If you guys wanna call/email and ask questions saying you heard im going with them to do the first rebuild ect, it may open there eyes to the community/market thats about to blow up- partially literally with a need for these products

They should recognize that they haven't really sold any of these so they should use you as a project.

I think you should look into some other companies as well as of right now.

I'd say call them, mention what you want to do and how it will create business for them, and go from there.

If anyone has any other trans builder suggestions throw them out there. SSP may be able to point you to someone as well.

I sent an email. ill call in the am to see what they got. the fact they dont list a convertor or VB upgrade has me frowning though

Why? It still does detail their upgrade pricing so if someone searches on google it will take them here. Think in terms of what is best for search engines.

We can easily start another thread for another manufacturer, again getting more search engine optimization with more keywords. Think...
