    E92 M3 Race Car Build

A friend of mine is building a E92 M3 race car. They are going all out and the most exciting thing of the build is that they will be using a Motec management system. If they succeed with it and the car runs well I will buy a M3 and we will be reading a twin turbo build thread.

NO WAY! You are going to attempt to do a Motec? That is incredible!

Any more details? Which motec unit and when? Who is this person?

The vehicle is a joint build by a company called Carello Auto which is a panel shop and a BMW dealer. They are entering the car in the GT Challenge series. One of the owners has been racing a F360 in the series up to now. They are going to attempt to use the Motec, I am not sure if they have already succeeded in getting it running as the tricky part is the knock sensing which I know up to now has not been supported by Motec. I will be finding out more information this week as I am going to see the car. If they do manage to get it running well it will be possible to use the same Motec Management system for a turbo charged application with the benefit of having existing maps for off boost driving. Tuning for boost will then be a walk in the park.
The rest will then be straight forward as you will need to get the pluming done for the turbos and a different inlet manifold. The pistons and conrod's will be sent out for a strengthened set to be made although I know that Mahle has decompressed forged pistons for the S65 and the conrods can be sent to one of the big US manufacturers.

Just a quick update. The car runs well with the Motec and did its first shake down track day on Saturday.

I think the Motec was used because it is sophisticated enough to do everything, AEM isn't. Not familiar with FAST.

I am not sure but will find out about the body kit. At the moment they have dynoed at 5500ft altitude and I think peak power is more or less the same as a well tuned street car with a straight through exhaust. I think that it was a big battle to get the base tune up and past the stock power considering they started from scratch but the good news is that Motec Australia now has a base tune for guys using there ECU.

There is a very experienced Motec tuner locally so support was very important.

On a side note I must remember what they did in regard to knock sensing because I know Motec does not have a facility for ionic sensing systems.

I am amazed that the motec can handle the S65. Doesnt the S65 alternator shut off when the engine is at WOT and loaded? There are a bunch of little bells and whistles that this motor has to get every ounce of power out of it, pretty cool that motec can dive right in and control everything.

Awesome! Good stuff, good to see people trying new things. Wether it works out or not (hopefully it does) they get a Click here to enlarge from me for just attempting something new and possibly starting a whole new chapter in the s65 fi world.

I know I am reviving an old as $#@! thread but...what happened to this car? a post was made saying that the car runs well with the motec...but I'm pretty damn sure that if they successfully turbo'd the s65 we would be seeing more of them 3 years later. Confused...

The car raced a full season with the Motec. Car got sold, will enquire who has it. I do not see a problem with Motec and turbos if $$$$ is spent.
