Finally something for N55 owners to get excited about!

I've been driving the N55 around for the past week or so evaluating the new BMW 2.40.1 update, AR 4" downpipe, and some Stage1 mapping changes, and I've been very impressed with the improvements. So much so that the car is actually feeling faster than our full bolt on N54! You guys know how I feel about feelings so I decided to hit up "Warren's Alley" for some quantifiable VBOX testing.

    Test Car:
2011 135i DCT, fully loaded w/ baby seat.
BMS Stage1 Tuning, 3/19 firmware, 6.25psi over stock settings.
    BMW 2.40.1 DME firmware.
3/4 tank of 91 octane with NOS octane booster.
    AR 4" Downpipe.
K1 rims all around with 245/45 Nitto 555Rs out back. How its driven daily.
58 degree weather, sea level track, probably close to 100' DA.

No meth, no race gas, no catback system, no intercooler, no intake, no drop in filter, no BS chargepipe, no seat removal, etc.

The car managed a best of quarter mile of 12.1@115mph w/ 1.9 60'.
    0-60 was 3.8 seconds, and 0-100 was 9.0 seconds.
I also recorded 60-130 but since I was starting the runs from a stand-still the shifting was not at all optimized for it. Still managed a very respectable 12.1 seconds though.

With this new BMW update, the AR 4" downpipe, and a few Stage1 firmware changes, the car has picked up around 5mph from where it was with the Stage1 alone months ago. Gentlemen I think the N55 has finally arrived! Click here to enlarge

Impressive, starting to get a better hang of the DCT eh? I wouldn't be surprised if it was quicker than the bolt on N54 even though the bolt on N54 is likely making more power simply due to the transmission.

Was hoping for a slip though but I'll take a Vbox...

    Good news!!

...but I have a few questions:

    1) When you say "BMS Stage1 Tuning, 3/19 firmware, 6.25psi over stock settings" is this simply the N55 JB3?
    2) Will the JB3 be upgradable to this "new" tune?
    3) "BMW 2.40.1 DME firmware." Do you have any detail on this update? When did it come out and what did it include?
    4) I think I saw the AR downpipe could be had with a cat. Is that so and how much would that hurt gains...would it even be worth replacing the factory downpipe?
    5) I'd love to see V-box data for stock, JB3, and this for comparison....or even better, dynos for each and with a catted AR downpipe.

Sorry for the 100 questions, but I'm ready to jump into a tune and I feel like I have to know it all before I dive in!!!!

The DCT is still pretty lame. 1.9 60' on drag radials? And it was definitely slipping a bit. No biggie though. I'll take the 12.1. Click here to enlarge

    1) The N55 JB3 naming didn't really make sense as its not really a JB3. So we changed the name to N55 Stage1. Click here to enlarge

    2) Same tune just different settings.

    3) Wrote up some info on n54tech. Get the update. It's awesome.

    4) I haven't tested it personally so it's an unknown.

    5) We have older VBOX data posted here: http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7992

You didn't heat them enough or use launch control I take it.

I got into the 1.7's, I'm sure you can too.

It's starting to get warm out here but he also needs practice. The car should do 11's no problem 60-130.

It's OK for what it is. Next time I'll do some dedicated 60-130s which should be quite a bit faster.

Launch control is too dramatic of a name for what it is. It should be called cutting high 1.9 60' times on drag radials. But yeah I used the LC feature.

I have yet to drive one of the new N55 motors, so I'm still new to that domain but was wondering if brake boosting still works or does it just default to this "LC feature"; basically, is there a better way to cut down the 60' times without using LC?

I don't know your launch feature, but can't you bump the revs up? You should be cutting easy 1.8's, I think you need an AR line lock.

i don't know about DCT , but SMG's LC mode was a joke ! launch @ 5000 and all you get is a cloud of tire smoke.

Will these new settings in the Stage 1 be available for download to current Stage 1 users? I like the numbers you posted, and I am about to install my "Gray" AR 4" catless downpipe.

There aren't any new settings, just make sure you have the latest DME version (from your dealer) and the latest Stage 1 firmware. The only thing he changed is changing the boost limit (in Terry's case to +6.25) I would email him or wait for him to respond here, he'll tell you what he thinks is safe to run on your car.

For me, I only have 91 octane available and no supporting mods so Terry said +4 psi would be safe and I could try +5 if I wanted to. I drove around on +4 for a week and it was silly how powerful it was (honestly, I had traction issues in 3rd gear a lot of the time) so I'm back to stock for now so I can enjoy the twisties around where I live =D
