What exactly does the custom firmware do?

I don't see one available for the t3i but thats understandable considering that it is a relatively new camera. Thanks for showing me the link though ! I'll be on the lookout for some t3i firmware and maybe play around with it

These I have in my rear garden.
They are not supposed to be blossoming allready. They are 3 weeks early.
They are about 5 1/5" wide

damn snails, you're all over the place! Nice shots, what lens and body? assuming 100-400 for the bird shots.

That's a wall paper shot right there.

I'm thinking of buying a 50mm f1.8, saw someone selling it on craig's...not sure what I need more though, I think flash would be better.

surprisingly the cheap ebay flash kits actually work pretty good, a friend of mine bought it about 6months ago and has no problems, and he says they work great

Most of my bird shots are with a Canon 7D paired with Canon 500mm ƒ/4.0L IS. Though the baby hawk, black headed chickadee, etc., are shot using a 7D or 5DII w/ the Canon 70-200 ƒ/2.8L IS MKII + 2X EF extender (400 5.6, basically).

any moon shots w/ the 500m? Nice setup, i'm still in the amateur state with my 500D, running the IS kit lens 18-55, and a 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS

Hmm - don't think so. The issue with moon shots w/ that focal length (and longer, I used a 2X on the 500mm ... !) is that you need a tracking tripod because the moon moves across the view finder relatively fast when you're zoomed in that far.

    Here is one from a 70-200 MKII and 2x EF (400mm f/10)

I had a 300D (orig. digital rebel) w/ kit lens for the longest time! You don't want to see my gear now lol.

^I didn't realize that, but yes, you are correct! I noticed how fast the sun sets, and also how fast the moon rises. Makes sense.

So yesterday I learned from 2 pros about using manual mode properly, and the Sunny 16 rule.

It is just amazing what you can learn from pros! Aperture (f-stop) and shutter speed, best friends. Learned about stopping up and down.

    F5.6 @ 0.5s @ ISO100 = F4 @ 1/4 @ ISO100 (I was shooting indoors at night in a dimly lit office)
