So I felt like reading the entire technical pamphlet on the M3 and a lot of that is the s65 engine and exhaust. I was quite surprised to find that they clearly describe that the "primary" cats are actually the minor metallic higher flow cats and the "secondaries" are the main cats which are denser ceramic. Now if anyone else knows especially with test pipes which are only removing the front "primaries" this is information that I have never heard. Sure the fronts are "primary" in location but clearly they are higher flowing metallic and are not a major obstruction which makes a lot of sense given the secondaries to me always seemed much larger.

Do test pipe people really not know this? (the manufactures ) or any company with x-pipes who could use this to sell their xpipe with HFC over test-pipes which leave you with the main cats in place!
See page 62

Not sure I have ever found the answer in all the years I reading about this car. Some say the USA m3's did not get brake regeneration (or whatever bmw calls it) where the alternator disconnects when accelerating and connects while braking to charge the system.

Also kind of related I sure noticed on this car the a/c does not seem to hinder performance at all. Yet it also does not seem to go warm when under WOT which cars I have had used to do which clearly showed me disengagement of the a/c under wot. Anyone know if this definetly disconnects the a/c pump during WOT?

If those things were true, I really wish bmw would have came up with a s65tu which had an electric water pump to shave pumping losses, direct injection and revised cam profiles. Would have gotten atleast 3-4 mph improvement, more power and could have stuck with the amazing NA v8. Really is too bad

Any of you see on e90post that really great thread from EAS I think who tested a dinan stroker, rdsport stroker and a FBO dct m3 with catless and ess tune.

It also showed the dinan intake/elbow caused the temps in the intake to be hotter. Makes sense-bigger is not usually better when the velocity of air is important and in the intake elbow it is clearly better to have higher velocity air traveling through the smaller elbow than a larger elbow with slower velocity. Same with all the dinan throttle bodies which lose power on every car I have seen them on. Too big means less velocity.

ANyway a FBO made about 380whp and so did a dinan stroker. Dinan made 20hp or so more in the rev range until about 6k and then the FBO may have even made more and peaked higher.

You can intpret as Dinan being a huge waste or the OEM car with a few mods to be a work of art and super efficient and powerful. The RD made 20 more hp than either of the 2 throughout the range.

SO stroker from dinan is huge waste

I have an opportunity to get my car custom tuned with a local company - they have been around for a few years and claim to provide a solid tune for the M3. They have lots of satisfied 335i, M5, etc users.

I asked them about how their tune compares to popular OTS tunes, and was told theirs is better because it accounts for our elevation (3500-4500ft), whereas others are typically developed at sea-level. I thought the BMW DME allowed for this kind of thing, but I'm not a car tech - just an enthusiast who reads a lot.

I've no reason to disbelieve them; they are good guys with a decent following - no real negatives. What I am worried about is lack of working cars running their tune - and 'the test of time'. We have a fair few M3s in Calgary, but most are stock - those that are modified are typically running ESS or G-power software. I'm thinking there can't be too many running their custom tune.

Any thoughts on the best route to take? I hear great things about Evolve & co - but also like the opportunity of supporting a local company. How bulletproof is the S65 engine if they made any errors in their code? They up the RPM as part of their tunes to 8600 -- and say it's safe to go to 9000 & beyond to a theoretical 12000? Truth in this?!

I deeply regret touching your car. If you recall, you didn't even tell me who you were prior to meeting up with you, because you knew I would turn down your business. After countless arguments online you shook my hand like a gentleman and put the BS behind. And then go on a year later to post some bull$#@! like that.

YOU WERE SITTING RIGHT NEXT TO ME WHEN YOUR CAR WAS CODED. You wanted me to check your Check engine light. Now you're trying to insinuate that I read the tune from your car? You're a jackass. A class act. Tell me how the hell I would read a tune from your car WHILE coding it at the same time (especially since coding and tuning cables are different)?

And what's even more funny is that tunes flashed with that cable are protected, just like my software is. I was probably excited your car had an eVolve tune because you had a check engine light and asked me to check what was wrong. You are a $#@!ty human being. It's ok, because I don't have to live every day with that.

I am wondering if anyone else has tried these two and noticed a significant difference in level of sound and performance? The Encore seemed much louder. I have a stock rear. I notice that the piping of the encore is on par with the OEM piping whereas the AA xpipe is smaller piping. I had my car dynoed with the encore awhile back and got 385 with hfc, tune and an air filter but later switched to AA xpipe with HFC's just to try it out. I felt on the butt dyno a bit slower.

Given pipe size is different I thought maybe there is some truth to this? I would also think encore with bigger pipes may be a choice for supercharged applications? I am changing back to encore for the sound alone. Both give a nice high pitch rasp but encore a much louder one

LINK OF BEARING SOUND AT THE BOTTOM!!

First off I would like to mention I live overseas and not in the US, so rules here are different!!

Ok guys I REALLY need some urgent help. Just bought a used M3 from the dealer, 2011 Frozen Gray M3. Beautiful Car and especially color. I loved it. Test drove it and everything seemed fine. However, after I paid and the Cheque cleared, I got the car 1 week later in horrible condition (got it yesterday). 10 minutes after driving it off the lot, the car stalled while idling, and died. I got a message saying "engine fault please contact BMW dealer" with the yellow check engine light. tried to start it again, it would constantly crank and no life at all. Tried again, nothing. After 1.5 mins approx, i cranked and if fired right up. Drove it no problems. After a while the rpm would go up and down on idle as if its dying and trying to keep itself running. It died again, and so I started it again. After a while I got both a FUEL PUMP AND ENGINE FAULT ERROR Message, however this happened while driving normally and the idle problems/stalling had COMPLETELY ceased. Everything at this point and till now is fine with the car, other than this VERY weird sound that I was hearing from the VERY beginning since I picked it up from the dealer (At first I thought the sound was just normal from an M3, stupid I know but I never drove or have any experience with the E9x M3s) Took me some time to notice there is something wrong. It is a TICKING/ clicking sound. It almost sounds like a tractor when i drive the car. It increases with RPM. On full throttle I cant hear it but I guess its because the engine screams so loud. The power on full throttle is also fine and as it should be. Feels just about right (in relation to other 400hp~ cars)

Could this sound be just from the fuel pump?? Or is it a bearing?? at 1.2k rpm and below I cant hear anything. only above those rpms you start to hear it. Sound comes HOT and COLD.

If it is a bearing I am definitely returning the car. If its just fuel pump related and this sound is coming from lack of fuel, ill just change the pump and keep the car.

Please guys LET ME KNOW all your opinions!!
