Insideline published this news a little while ago and what every other site focused on was that Albert Biermann (head of M product development) stated BMW M would like to build their own car. That is great news as a dedicated M car built by M is something that we have been waiting for... well, for forever. What struck us was this quote by Biermann though, "It's about employing the right technology at the right time and we're on a steep learning curve with turbos. We're getting damn close to matching the response of a naturally aspirated engine but with much lower fuel consumption."

The new BMW twin turbo V8 and V12 motors are pretty sweet. Except when they catch on fire. This recall affects anyone with the N63 and S63 twin turbo V8's or the N74 twin turbo V12 which is used only in the 760 models. The reason for the recall is due to 102 engine water pump failures up to this point and 2 engine bay fires. There is an auxiliary pump used with these engines that helps cool the turbochargers and if it fails this will lead to dramatically increased temperatures. Owners will start being notified next month but why wait, call the dealer to schedule this water pump replacement immediately.

If you have a 535i and are looking for an aftermarket FMIC, you probably have run into the same thing I have. Lots of people said it fits, no one has direct experience though. After going thru quite a few other 535i owners experiences, I decided to try and take it on myself. I started not trusting what people were saying online (I know, shocker) and calling manufacturers directly. One of those was CP-E. As fortune would have it, I got the owner on the phone and I started asking him questions. They too said they sold one but had never fit one themselves and, well, same old story. Josh (the owner) did pique my interest by letting me know he had sold quite a few and never received a return, so he assumes they fit. This, and now knowing Josh a little better at this point, really rang true to me. So, even if it wasn't a "direct" fit, how bad could it be? I knew better then to DIY but, after seeing how it was done, I don't think it would be too bad.

Green Hell was always about pushing the envelope of what’s possible in a street driven M3, and nearly two years ago when the car was first built it was fairly extreme by some standards. This is the type of stuff we like to see. While other sites are re-posting BMW press releases about production of the F30 3 series starting we are more interested in real world BMW performance comparisons. Renntech took an X5 M with only their tune to PBIR (Palm Beach International Raceway) to run on the strip versus a stock X5 M. The results are absolutely awesome with the tuned car running 12.09@113 and the stock car 12.72@107. That is 6 MPH and just over 6 tenth's with just a tune, impressive.

Car and Driver has brought us the meat of what we want to see regarding the new F10 M5, the performance numbers. They tested it at 12.0@122 which is not bad. With proper rubber and conditions this is an easy 11 second car stock. This is roughly a 7 mph trap speed gain on the previous generation E60 M5 which had roughly a 7 mph trap speed gain on the E39 M5 it replaced. We had hoped the car would be closer to the ~125 range though especially with the DCT.

We were extremely impressed when just a couple days ago we saw the dyno numbers posted for the Horsepower Freaks Stage 5 E46 M3 turbo. There is not much a car making over 1,000 horsepower needs to worry about. An Acura Integra would likely be the least of the worries of a vehicle that powerful but guess again. BimmerBoost member @gringotegra's turbo Integra GSR definitely impressed us and was surprisingly fast vs. stout competition. This is a case of power to weight as the Integra at around 2500 pounds is almost 1 1/2 ton lighter than the E46 M3 it was racing. That definitely helps when the Acura is making around 300 wheel horsepower less.

We aren't sure what there is to debate really, do it already. Albert Biermann (Head of M product development) told Insideline the following on the Z4 M, "There are days when it hurts not to have one, but there was no compelling business case at the time when the decision was taken." Uh, but there was a business case for the X5 M? The X6 M? The 550 GT? The X6 hybrid that was already canned? Yet the platform that has the potential to be the best drivers car in the BMW lineup that BMW Motorsport has already been racing doesn't make sense? Are you serious Biermann?

Congratulations to Horsepower Freaks for continuing to raise the bar on the S54 platforms. Dyno numbers over 1000 horsepower are simply no joke and that level of power is difficult for many to even comprehend. The highest figure was hit at 29 psi as going above this amount of boost produced diminishing returns. They intend to dyno the car again with smaller wheels which should make an appreciable difference. It is likely at this point head flow limitations are starting to be hit and Chris at HPF hinted at the cam profile possibly being a liability. Regardless, we are seeing some amazing things out of the S54 that nobody would have ever thought were possible not too long ago.

We prefer Fifth Gear videos to all other British automotive reviews. They use real drivers, with real racing experience, who evaluate the cars as enthusiasts would expect instead of trying to entertain you with crazy stunts. It is very cool to see Tiff Needell and British rally driver Mark Higgins throwing these two cars around a road course. What is interesting is that they both come to the same conclusion, the BMW 1M is the better driver's car. The BMW 1M continues to crush the RS3 around the track as the laptimes show, no surprise.

The BMW S1000RR surprised a lot of people when it came out. Nobody expected a BMW sport bike with such stellar performance and cutting edge technology. BMW is not resting on their laurels as they have updated the bike for 2012. The engine is the same 193 horsepower mill with changes to throttle maps for smoother performance. The suspension however has received numerous changes including new springs, forged/milled fork bridge, and the front and rear suspension geometry has changed. There are also more color options. One of the best bikes out there just got even better.

The X6 isn't exactly much of an off-road vehicle in factory form. It actually is a rather heavy street vehicle (~5300 pounds) offering minimal sport and utility. All German Motorsports decided to create an off-road version of the X6 and that is just awesome in our book. They dropped the weight to 4500 pounds using a fiberglass body and added 25 inches of suspension travel. Tires are 32 inchers obviously for off-road duty. Under the hood is 750 horsepower (not from a BMW motor, from GM, despite the engine covers) which will be needed to compete in the SCORE trophy truck series.

Congrats to BimmerBoost member @alextremo who took his manual F10 550i out to the New England Dragway and ran 12's with only a Dinan Stage 2 tune. Alex weighed his car with himself in it and it came in at a staggering 4,560 pounds so running almost 113 mph and high 12's on stock runflat street tires along with that weight is certainly impressive. The Dinan tune clearly has made a considerable difference. The vehicle had an 1/8 tank of gas and some MS109 race fuel mixed with pump gas. This vehicle is capable of much more in cooler weather with some drag radials as well as supplementary modifications.

Forza Motosport is awesome, this is well known. Forza Motorsport is the latest game in the series and reviews across the board praise the game as automotive nirvana. The new BMW M5 graces the cover and it is only natural that BMW wanted to share in the publicity the game is receiving. This led to the creation of the "M5 Forza Cup" which will award a brand new M5 to the person with the fastest virtual laptime with the new M5. Carbon fiber is much more than just something that looks cool. It also saves weight and when applied in the appropriate places it makes a considerable difference. This is why BMW used it for the roof on the E92 M3. BMW skimped on the carbon roof for the 1M (among other things) but not to worry as Revosport has a carbon roof option for the 1M. The carbon panel weighs only 4 kilograms vs. the stock 16 kilograms. That is 12 kilograms (26 pounds) saved at the highest point of the car. Cool looking and functional? You bet.

Renntech is branching out to other markets from their traditional Mercedes tuning and they have several ECU tunes now available for BMW vehicles. The Renntech 335 diesel tune puts down an impressive 311 horsepower to the wheels along with a tremendous 432 wheel torque. The ECU has to be sent in for the flash unless one is local. A 24 month warranty is also included in the $1100 price. This tune should be applicable to the X5 diesel as well in the United States.

Well here it is, the new 2012 4 door F30 3 series. Not really all that much different externally with BMW playing it extremely safe. The styling envelope is not being pushed with the 3 taking cues from the F10 5 series for the headlights and the rear taillight design being as benign as possible. The interior is also a very minor update on the E90 with the BMW switchgear and gear lever that we have all grown accustomed to.

You may remember that AutoExpress drag raced the 1M against the DSG RS3 a few months back. In that comparison, the Audi won by virtue of its dual clutch transmission and all wheel drive launch although the 1M had the higher trap speed. This time both cars are taken around a road course and the 1M just flat out crushes the Audi by almost 2 seconds on what is a fairly short track. The driver mentions the Audi is heavier and more of a car for beginners with understeer versus the 1M which is more nimble and often requires the throttle to correct the tail stepping out. A N55 355i Owner was kind enough to stop by last week for some testing of a prototype unit of the cp-e N55 downpipe. The day went perfectly for such testing. The part was designed and built completely from computer data, without any fabrication on the car. The part was already ready without being in any vehicle prior. This was a true testament to doing CAD development in the most effecient way possible. Fitment was dead on, lining up with brackets, flanges and sensors flawlessly. Performance was to our satisfaction as well. Dyno charts below.
