    • Edmunds tests the N54 powered 2011 740i - 0-60 in 5.5, 1/4 mile in 14.1 @ 100

The new 7 series is a beautiful car. We never thought a 6 cylinder would really do it justice but times have changed with the BMW turbo motors. The N54 twin-turbo 6 cylinder offers great performance in the 4300 pound 7 series. 0-60 in the mid 5 second range with 100 mph trap speeds? Not bad at all. Check out the edmunds review and the data panel below.

C&D tested it before and they claimed 5.1 , we have a 740i in family and i believe Edmunds numbers are closer to the real world numbers.
one thing , it uses N54 not N55 Click here to enlarge

Does it have an upgraded ECU? What power does it have to the crank?

Can you imagine the number of 'WTF' moments from drivers of sporty cars, after they've been killed by a giant, tuned 740i!

And yet again BMW claims the N55 is the better engine, yet doesn't hesitate to put the N54 into everything else

this engine was available for 7-series since early 2009 ,even before they started putting N55 in 3-series. so it doesn't mean they chose N54 because it was a better engine , they chose because there were no other choices

I thought they didn't bring out the 740i name until just now

No, they had it available from the beginning. They just haven't switched to the N55 yet in it for whatever reason.
