• S65 V8 Rod Bearing Failure in Drew's Gintani Supercharged M3 - covered under Gintani warranty

I have been reluctant to post about this earlier as I wanted to give Gintani ample time to look at the engine to try and determine what happened before I posted. We have an idea what caused it but currently the motor has not been broken down to do a full inspection. Given the current drama / speculation on the forums, I felt, along with Gintani, that we should post now and let everyone know that a failure did occur on my car, and then follow up later when we have more solid detailed information. As of now I know of no other Gintani car that has had a failure, but mine.

The engine had been making a slight ticking noise on the passenger side wheel well for about a month before the failure, it sounded like an exhaust leak, but it is difficult to pinpoint noises on this engine. It appeared to have been a bad rod bearing that was causing the noise. Eventually the bearing failed, the rod seized onto the crank shaft, broke and one half came out the side of the block. That is all I currently know for certain, when Gintani tears the motor down they can investigate further to try and pinpoint exactly what it was, then post pictures, and a more accurate detailed analysis. It appears though that the Active Autowerke car that failed, is very similar in nature to this failure.

A few things to point out -

      1. I've been running 9psi for over 10K miles on the motor, currently no other kit runs this much boost.
      2. When I dynoed the car, and removed the air filter, it hit 11psi, and you can see on the dyno a huge dip up top, which could be detonation.
      3. The seals on my 1st blower blew out while doing some spirited driving, eventually the car ran out of oil, this could have damaged the bearing.
      4. Other 2008 motors have been torn down and found to have wear on the rod bearings that could have eventually failed as mine did.

The current status is that a long block is on it's way, Gintani is covering the cost of the motor and all labor, which is above and beyond what most companies would do. I am extremely thankful to them for doing so, they have always taken care of me. Right now my plans are that I am going to keep the kit, but most likely will lower the boost, hopefully I will be up and running soon, with more dyno's, video's, vbox data, etc.

Rod bearing is a failure caused by detonation over extended periods of time ( it has happened to my 02 APR mototrsport built 1.8t GTi runing 30psi 3 times and i gave up on that piece of crap )
There are plenty of 08 DCT coupes. Sedans did not get DCT until later (midway, perhaps?) in the 08 MY.

Joseph, as it turns out I was wrong, CP3 IS NOT Pencilgeek, I think we owe Robert an apology for assuming that.

How could it not be? He is the only person who ever went around saying a valve spring failure was a blown motor.

I was positive it was him as well, I was wrong, it's not him, one could easily retype what he wrote.

        I'm not convinced.

However, I do find it a bit disappointing that m3f would allow negative commentary from people who just join up to spew garbage as long as it is against me or Gintani. How can anyone have any respect for a place which allows that and deletes/bans anything from the other side?

Well If this is true I'd feel sorry for saying what I said and losing my cool to a degree BUT on the other hand these are things he put into peoples head and when he realized it was wrong he didn't bother correct it. And now the copycats keep repeating that old BS over and over. So its partly his responsibility imo so he should just live with it. I was accused of spreading the rumor that his motor blew which I didn't have anything to do with so oh well.

Sorry to hear of your problems Drew! What Gintani is doing is unprecedented, replacing your motor free of cost.

We're all big boys here and know that adding FI to a car that's not designed for it is risky. One of those risks is catastrophic motor failure and it's not really up the company that made the kit to cover that.

Kudos to those that do and I hope you get your car back soon.

Went through a frustrating time with both my track car (944 turbo) and my street car ('92 Audi S4 5 cylinder turbo). Took a year to shake both of them out. Just issue after issue. I have 4 cars, three mine (the other one is a '90 Jeep Cherokee) and at one point all three of my cars was in the shop. My wife loved pointing that one out...

Ended up blowing the motor in the 944 (30% leakdown in cylinder #3 and that was the best it got!) and replaced it with a Chevy 350 LS1. Making 372rwhp and almost the same in torque with it and it weighs less than a C5 Z06 Vette. Almost have my bang list marked off on it, 1st track day is in 3 weeks!

Have the Audi RS2'd with a big FMIC, exhaust, Porsche brakes, etc. Fun daily driver, lots of power, all factory parts and fitment. Front speakers recently stopped working, so doing some stereo stuff to it next week.

Has Gintani torn your motor down yet? Any news on what the failure was?

good luck on your fix drew, it truly is awesome gintani is covering the costs, you must realize im sure that when pushing boundaries stuff like this happens. your car was and still is awesome, you raced some serious competitors and really held your own, i always loved your films. it will be just a minor setback, nothing out of pocket, and who knows, maybe it'll inspire you to build your motor instead Click here to enlarge

Just read all 27 pages of that trash thread. It's the usual collection of kids playing Internet Baller with busted up 3rd or 4th hand E46 M3s or 330i's (which are great cars don't get me wrong) done up with fake M3 parts. It's basically the same thing that happened with the E36 M3 - Once they broke the $20k mark the kiddies started snapping them up and became instant online ballers.
