    • The 2018 F90 M5 is going to be more about drag racing than any other M5 generation - Launch control/acceleration video

BMW put out a video showing the F90 M5 launch control in action and of course everyone started uploading it to Youtube as if it was their own. The point is the video shows the real emphasis of the new F90 generation M5 and that is off the line acceleration.

Drag racing if you will. The M5 is supposed to be a four-door sports car that can dominate the roadcourse. The thing is, we have seen a shift where M owners care more about straightline power than anything else. What did you expect when M started putting out SUV's?

The funny thing is, those SUV's could often times beat the M5 as M5 owners are notorious for struggling to launch their cars. In all fairness, a high torque rear wheel drive car is difficult to launch on the street.

The M5 will not be a stoplight warrior and with more weight on the front end of the car less of a balanced track toy you rotate with the throttle. BMW to their credit is allowing to select a rear wheel drive mode but that does not remove any weight from the front of the car.

It's a drag car now. It launches with no drama and the launch control system doesn't even make the tires squeal with a 3k rpm launch.

You will notice the driver short shifts a couple times rather than having the car handle the gearshifts likely to prevent people on the internet from figuring out the acceleration figures. Suffice it to say, the car will be quick in a straight line and will no longer struggle at stop lights.

I can't wait until we get this car for testing! I love how it squats right before it launches, so amazing.

Just saw in the UK, the new M5 got a 18% msrp increase over the F10. It is now more expensive than the E63S.

I'd like to see pics, dynos, and some technical details before deciding.

That said, I wouldn't rule out smaller turbos for better spool.

Some of those paddle shifts looked delayed. I think that is where some criticism will come in compared to the DCT.

They better keep the DCT in the next gen M3/M4.

Who on here thinks this new M5 will be quicker than the current E63S or RS7?

I think the E63 S, M5, and RS7 are all going to be very close to one another.

As the new RS7 with a new motor isn't out yet the M5 may be the straightline champ with a slight edge.

Honestly, it's boring. They are all so similar now.

You'd think they would lead the pack with 5.0L of displacement. What model are you referring to?

        The current XFR.

They could put a much bigger blower on there for one.

I know they make the XF, but was not able to spec out an XFR on jags web site. I know they make the XJR, i can confirm it is RWD only....

They went from 16 to 24.5psi? Maybe up to 24.5 psi of boost based on altitude and other parameters....
