• BMW planning a Van?

The German publication Auto Motor Und Sport is reporting that BMW is working on a van. This would likely compete with the Mercedes R-Class. Rumor is BMW intends to call it the "Advanced Family Sports Activity Tourer" which is BMW speak for van. The name boils down to AFAST for short, as in, a fast way way to alienate your dedicated fans. We don't know what to think, guess we will have to wait for the M version... just kidding, maybe.

BMW is one of the most succesfull car manufacturers, and if I'm not mistaken one of the only private car manufacturers left. I don't understand why they're changing things up so much, what they've been doing for decades has been working, why change it!?

With news like this and the fact they are releasing 13 fwd models by 2015. BMW will be a completely different company 5-10 years from now. I don't quite understand the move, but I guess they are scared of the VW Group. A preemptive strike of sorts.

The worst thing i see about this is that it seems to be late, which indicates its just a competitors move. I believe the 1M and M trucks were worse moves than this.

Is there any information on the current financial state of BMW? With them being privately owned, its possible that these changes could be a result of money issues and we wouldn't know about it.

They release sales figures and such, they are making money hand over fist right now. I think BMW is as profitable as it has ever been.

Yeah it looks like they are doing fine. I am guessing that M3_WC is right on the money. With the premium market growing, and VW group out for blood, BMW is grabbing for market share wherever it can.

Would be nice for them to grab more marketshare in the performance market... not the mini van and FWD markets. Plus, those feed in profit anyway so let's see some BMW muscle already.

A company is trying to survive, they wont cater to few loyal customers. They will cater to the biggest pool of customers they can; with the most money. It's a business first, then a car company.

I'd like to see them build a real supercar. Make it look something like the M1 but with performance and overall achievement along the lines of Koenigsegg or Bugati, yet with the price of the M3 GTS. Thinking what BMW's M engineers could do if they were let loose gives me goose bumps. For BMW at this stage though it's probably a bad idea. After all, I'm no marketing person and methinks BMW doesn't need a halo car. But it's what I call Joy!

BTW, my wife is the van person in this family. I asked her if she would buy a BMW van. She just rolled her eyes.

Yes, and while we are making wishlists, I want a private island populated by 18-22 year old college girls with fake boobs who are nyphos. This private island would also have a race track, yacht, and I would have a team of people to go run errands for me like taking my private helicopter to go pick up whatever I want whenever I want it. I could go on, but you get the point.

A Buggatti for the price of an M3 GTS, sign me up.
