    • AWRON swapped an N54 into a 1970's BMW E9 3.0 CSL and made 372 rwhp

AWRON in Germany offers various BMW engine swap packages. They provide the electronics to make it all happen including the engine management. You may remember their N63 twin turbo V8 swap into an E63 6-Series chassis from earlier this year.

This time they may have outdone themselves. The N54 is a questionable choice for something like an E9 but there is no denying this is a cool swap.

This appears to be a replica CSL but who cares? It's awesome. With 372 to the tires it is going to move well and if the owner wants more power he can get it. Whether the chassis can cope with it is a different matter entirely.

The engine package electronics have the following characteristics:

Motor control fully OBD, EOBD can be diagnosed.
      DSC is disabled
      Secondary air deactivated
Configuration Diagnostics Control unit network adapted for self-sufficient use
Subsequent motor probes Diagnostics and function deactivated
      Configuration on manual gearbox

The N54 engine package has all the characteristics of a standard vehicle which is necessary for the fully functional engine operation. Furthermore, all existing motor protection functions correspond to the series, functional and active to ensure protection against motor damage.

The kit is designed to allow you to install it in a variety of BMW models and connect it to the existing wiring system.

The real question is, "what does it cost?"

Ya and the 372 looks to be kW not hp so 498 would be the right figure. I'll edit when I get a chance.

I emailed these guys about doing an N54 in my wagon, and I think the harness for install was around $3k plus another $1500 for ECU flash work (to sync with my old OBD and the the E39 I-Bus). Not bad.

That's crazy...for that money, I'd just swap an S54 in and turbocharge it.

Actually that's even harder to do :-/. It's not exactly a wire in affair either, due to my motor being an M52TUB28. I have dual vanos, but not MS43 like an E46, and downgrading to an S52 and it's electronics don't exactly mesh up either.

It would cost me 3-6k to do a proper supercharger or turbo setup. With my fab skills a used N54+ trans and AWRONs wiring, I'd have a pretty sweet daily.

I don't know about S54 reliability, but the N54 is plagued with little recurring gremlins. Seals, gaskets, O2 sensors, injectors, coils, hpfp, etc. It's not a cheap motor to maintain.

ive worked on them since their inception, usually a good once over refresh keeps them going. i did injectors in a buddies car and theyve been going fine for the past 3 years without a hiccup. 02 sensors are a wear-item, as are seals, just like any other motor.....

I go LS, spend it all in the same way to refresh an LS motor, or go N54 and do the same, and at least I know this one like the back of my hand...

That's 372whp on a dyno jet. Which is right around what a mild tune on a N54 will produce.

Yeah that should be exactly right but if they just posted the whole graph we could easily see what is what.

Don't know the correction, don't know the units, etc. Newton meters obviously looks to be the torque but is the power PS, Kw, etc.?

        Cool setup!

If you're taking swaps the logical answer is LS Juan.

No. Just no. Especially in an E9.

Hell, an N54 doesn't even belong in an E9 but I can live with that unlike seeing an LS under the hood.
