    • 2018 BMW F97 X3 M expected to utilize F80 M3 & F82 M4 S55 3.0 liter turbo engine with up to 500 horsepower

Performance SUV's are popular and BMW loves producing as many SUV variants as possible to pad the bottom line. An X7 is on the way for this reason and BMW plans to create a 2018 X3 M model launching next year. Many of you have seen the spyphotos of this model testing.

The X3 M will go head to head with the Mercedes-AMG GLC63 AMG. As the AMG M177 twin turbo V8 packs some serious muscle BMW will need the S55 motor out of the F80 M3 and F82 M4.

The question is, will they fix the problems with it? They pretty much will have to. It just depends on if BMW intends to announce they made changes which publicly admits they screwed up. BMW is insecure, cheap, and petty so seeing them have to admit to design changes would be satisfying and deserved.

Keep in mind the S55 motor making its way under the hood is a rumor floating around but what other motor will the car use to competitive? The S55 is pretty much the choice as BMW does not have the balls to give it a V8 and have the X3 M run circles around the X5 M.

Bumping this to 500 hp and not the M3/4 makes no sense.

Actually it does as this will weigh almost 1000 pounds more.

They probably won't bump the power as much as they will the torque anyway just like the X5M.

I think bmw engineers still can make a balanced car with up to 600-650 hp.
Do you think guys they dont go with it due to shortened lifetime of its aggregates or due to some other things?

So if the X3M gets the S55 or a revised S55. In theory this suv will still be sold when the next gen M3/M4 arrives. Why does it seem it is not entirely impossible that BMW just carries over the S55 to the next M3/M4. Similar to what they are doing with the next gen M5 and S63. Would be a big departure from the past and the M3 getting an all new engine program with each new generation.

Yeah it will likely be a revised motor and the next gen motor. BMW wants to ditch the S55 as quickly as possible.

The S55 is a great motor from the factory I just hope the aftermarket can come through for us with a reliable crank resolution.

The problem is multiple aftermarket solutions have also failed. TPG keyed crank hub...failed. Gintani billet one piece crank hub and new bolts...failed. Stock crank up with new APR bolts and more torque applied...failed.

Not looking good for the S55. So much so, some aftermarket companies have stopped developing products for the S55.

I have some additional info on this. I'll post it in another thread later in the week.
