• Breaking: BMW 2.0 liter turbo 4 cylinder specs - 245 horsepower, 258 pound-feet

      We still do not know what the internal designation for this motor is but we now know it is official and it is coming. The specs are 245 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This motor will first appear in the Xdrive28i when it comes on sale in the United States. The motor will be rated around 30 mph on the highway which improves considerable on the N52 it will be replacing. Compression is 10.0:1. More details to come shortly such as the designation, boost, redline, etc.

        Another case of a turbo sized for people who don't rev their engines out. Let's hope if they ever make a "M" motor out of it that it will at least have some real hardware changes and not just a better intercooler and a reflash...... *cough* 1M *cough*

        i think this is cool but bmw is not really the car to be having a 4cyl turbo... i mean if you have a 6cyl turbo making good numbers the only reason to drop to 4cyl is fuel saving? is it DI?

        It's just a picture to accompany the article... it isn't the actual motor.

        Lol Sticky I know, I'm guessing based on reported HP/TQ specs, and recent trends in the automotive market.



        EDIT: I could of sworn it said 245HP/285ft-lbs, but instead it says 245HP/258ft-lbs, maybe the turbo isn't obnoxiously under-sized......



        My BMW I-4 would be 8,000RPM, 360HP (1-up Subaru, Mitsubishi and Hyundai) 300ft-lbs, 2.0L at 12psi stock, peak power at 7300RPM and peak torque at 6900RPM or so.

        With DI it would get decent MPG I think, but not as good as the real motor being developed.

        Rumors were back in 2008 that BMW was going to make this thing rev out to 11k. Looking back, pretty ridiculous.

        Your idea of the BMW I-4 turbo is what it would have been if BMW was still BMW.

        I have a feeling this motor has something to do with F1 going back to turbo engines. Back in the 80's they used the M10 block. This could possibly be their new platform.

        I seriously doubt there is any F1 connection. Those motors no longer represent anything in production.

        wow not bad power figures. vw's 2.0T makes 200/200 factory but when dyno'd it produced around 200wheel and even more torque, so it is way underrated, i wonder if they underrate this too. and i did notice the last comment that it isnt the motor being discussed, that turbo shown is super tiny, probably incapable of producing the figures we will see. mini makes what in the 180 some horse with their S turbo motor? keep a look out for the real engine photo, im sure we're all curious about the architecture.

        No, that makes too much sense. Besides, BMW's horsepower is more green than Hyundai's horsepower.

        I don't believe in high revs in this engine. Turbo has nice power at mid revs already and the target segment surely apreciates not needing to rev the engine but being able to enjoy power enough in the 1 - 3000 rpm they spend 95% of their time.

        Good business thinking from BMW.

        It's a 328/N52 replacement. They aren't competing with anyone but themselves with this motor.

        and its a crap version of Mitsubishis 4B11. Anymore than stock hp and it goes poof. I wouldnt be surprised if Vishnu or Terry gets ahold of one and tweaks it to 350-400hp.

        Sounds like a cool little motor. But I dont think it will be as beastly as the N54 modded. For an entry level moddable BMW it sounds like a fine choice.
