Being able to say the Pope is one of your customers certainly offers quite a bit of prestige. Mercedes-Benz recently delivered a brand new W166 M-Class based Popemobile to Pope Benedict XVI. This is not the first Mercedes-Benz Popemobile as there have been variants based on the G Wagon as well as previous generation ML SUV's. This is a very cool race to see although somewhat of a mismatch. The W211 E55 AMG belongs to BenzBoost member RedBullJnky (whom we thank for the footage) and is by all accounts a seriously fast E-Class. 540 wheel horsepower and 574 pound-feet of wheel torque courtesy of Eurocharged tuning makes for a low 11 second car capable of trapping in the mid 120's. A little while ago a debate raged on the BenzBoost forums regarding the horsepower output of the CLK63 AMG Black Series which came out as a 2008 model car versus the brand new C63 AMG Black Series. BenzBoost was able to obtain courtesy of Renntech six dynojet run files from two C63 AMG Black Series vehicles and fifteen CLK63 AMG Black Series run files from six different vehicles. All hail what appears to be (at least on paper) the new king of the luxury performance sedan segment. The current E63 AMG is already a beast but as reported in October was rumored to get all wheel drive and a dual clutch transmission. Part of that report is now confirmed by MotorTrend who got to spend some time with the new E63 AMG. Here is the final round of spyphotos showing the CLA45 AMG testing before the official debut of the CLA-Class at the Detroit Auto Show in January. The CLA45 AMG itself will make its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show later in the year. The engine will be the M133 turbocharged and direct injected 2.0 liter four-cylinder with an output of 354 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque thanks to 26 psi of boost from its turbo. ...Published on 11-30-2012 06:25 PM
The SLS AMG in the video below belongs to a tuner out of San Diego California by the name of HG Motorsports. This is really the first BenzBoost has seen of an M156 or M159 tuned by them in action. The car features their ECU tune, long tube headers, Akrapovic titanium exhaust, and HRE P43S wheels. Power figures are not stated and no dyno results were posted showing the gains of the parts but the video clearly shows the car taking on stout competition and doing well. ...Published on 11-30-2012 12:34 AM
Mercedes had a strong 2012 LA Auto Show with some major debuts. The first of which is the one that has been getting all the attention, the brand new SLS AMG Black Series. Mercedes showed up with a stunning yellow/gold painted example. The color simply is incredible in person with a very rich and deep look to it. In stock from the Cadillac CTS-V with its supercharged 6.2 liter LSA V8 is stronger than the standard C63 AMG (one without the P31 package). The difference on a dynojet is about ~100 wheel horsepower. The C63 is slightly lighter but is significantly detuned in stock form to protect the egos of the owners of the other 63 AMG models. The BMW E60 M5 in stock form is stronger than the new twin turbo 550 models from Mercedes and its strength really is the top end. Well, the new Twin Turbo motors are changing the game as this video shows as with a tune the M278 V8 is not only on par with an S85 V10 but one that also is tuned. Turbos definitely make that possible. In stock form the M278 puts out about 40 less wheel horsepower than the BMW S85 V10 which is in the 420 wheel horsepower range stock. ...Published on 11-25-2012 09:58 PM
It's a wrap, the 2012 Formula 1 season is officially in the record books. A bittersweet season for Mercedes fans who had some moments to be proud of with Nico Rosberg scoring a victory but also learning that Michael Schumacher would be retiring from the sport. The SLS AMG and Ferrari 458 are both aimed toward a similar demographic and share some notable similarities. Both are powered by naturally aspirated V8's sending their power to the rear wheels through dual clutch transmissions. The Ferrari has a mid-engine layout however versus the front engine Mercedes and this being a Spyder it is a little heavier than the 458 coupe (about 110 pounds). Mercedes-Benz AMG will be launching several new AMG models based around a turbocharged and direct injected 2.0 liter four-cylinder motor. These models will include the CLA45 AMG, A45 AMG, B45 AMG, and even the GLA45 AMG cross-over. The motor is expected to have an output of 354 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque which is a considerable improvement over the current 201 horsepower 1.8 liter turbo four-cylinder in Mercedes 250 models. ...Published on 11-22-2012 10:31 AM
The Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 effort is now completely under the control of Daimler. This move follows on the decision of Abu-Dhabi based investment fund Aabar to put its 40% stake in the team up for sale. Daimler now becomes the sole owner of the team. Aabar also relinquished its 3% stake in the Daimler Motor Company. The M157 is flat out a beast of a motor even in stock form. When tuned, well, the thing just gets even more insane. Just look at the video below for proof where Carlsson's CK63 effortlessly gets to 207 miles per hour from a stop and does so very quickly. Carlsson claims they increased the output of this Performance Package CLS63 AMG from 557 horsepower to 652 horsepower. No dynographs to prove it but the video certainly shows some stupid fast acceleration so no reason to doubt the claims although European tuners should start supporting their output figures. ...Published on 11-20-2012 07:51 PM
The last time the SLC was mentioned was in June of this year when the model was delayed indefinitely and put under "observation" due to its costs being deemed too high. Automobile, who gets things wrong pretty frequently, is saying the SLC will come in 2014 to replace the SLS. Why the SLS is being replace is anyone's guess as the SLC was supposed to be a 911 competitor aiming at a different market than the SLS AMG. ...Published on 11-20-2012 11:40 AM
Ok by now everyone hopefully knows the E-Class is getting a facelift with a new headlight design. Recently in Spain an undisguised facelifted E-Class was caught testing so the general design is pretty much known. This new video however gives us an in-depth look at the new design including what it looks like lit up. The United States Grand Prix in Austin at the brand new circuit of Americas was a success. Lewis Hamilton had his second victory in the United States taking the checkered flag followed by Sebastian Vettel in second and Fernando Alonso in third. This sets up an interesting battle for the championship at the final race of the season in Brazil. Well this story finally has some closure and it seems justice has been served. Back in October 2011 MBUSA CEO Ernst Lieb was relieved of his duties. It was later revealed that he was relieved due to charging personal expenses to the company expense account. Charging things like personal vacation flights, remodeling his home, and his wife's country club membership. This thing looks flat out cool, like a G-Class from the future. Introducing the Mercedes Ener-G-Foce which is designed to look like a Patrol Vehicle from the year 2025. The styling cues are taken from the G-Class and modified very radically. Hot on the heels of the SLS AMG Black Series Coupe which was just revealed officially last week is the announcement that the car will also come as a roadster. The idea of a track focused lightweight hardcore high-performance convertible is not anything new as Ferrari successfully did this Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spyder and Lamborghini as well with the LP 570-4 Perfomante. Now Mercedes is joining the mix with the SLS AMG Black Series Roadster. ...
