This interview has been edited a bit from its original form to make it easier to understand in written form. We covered avariety of topics including the ever popular torque limiter questions, transmission limits, CARB certification, and pricing among others. Remember that source we quoted who revealed to us that the C63 Black Series would get the M156 V8? You know, over a month before anyone else got this information? Well, this same source told us the car was a given for the United States. Additionally, the car will be debuting new super sticky Dunlop tires and the motor will share some SLS similarities namely it looks like the internals. Considering the track record of this inside source thus far we are not going to doubt them this time and any worries people had of the car only going to Canada or not coming at all should be dismissed. ...Published on 07-24-2011 03:52 PM
Hamilton won in style at an exciting Nurburgring today. He managed to come on top with a three way battle with Fernando Alonso, and Mark Webber that lasted till the end of the final pitstop at the closing stage of the race. All three drivers managed to lead the race at one point in the final 10 laps, with the distance between all three never going above 2 seconds. But Hamilton managed finish first after over taking Alonso on the first corner exit his pitstop. Vettel had a forgetful race as he fought with Ferrari's Massa for fourth place. Massa was able to hold of Vettel's attacks until they pitted for medium tires on the last lap. Red Bull's pit crew proved to be quicker and released him a full second faster than Massa's crew. Adrian Sutil took six spot after opting for one less stop than the rest. Nico Rosberg took seventh after having a battle with Massa at the beginning of the race. Michael Schumacher who started tenth on the grid managed to come in position over take Rosberg early in the race, fell victim to the wet astro turf and spun his car at the entrance to the corner named after him. How is this for high-tech weather testing? Want to see how a car will do in a category 5 hurricane? No problem. Want to see how it will do in 150+ degree heat? Mercedes certainly does. Just look at the SLK in the photo. They even test the cars to -40 degrees Fahrenheit literally freezing them. This climate testing is all part of a new facility in Southern Germany Mercedes built to test prototypes in controlled conditions before they ever even hit the road for testing in order to anticipate and correct problems before real world situations. Webber for the second race in a row was able to take pole postion in Germany. Hamilton was suprised with second after Mclaren's horrible runs on friday. Vettel for the first time in 15 races will be out of the first grid row in third place followed by Alonso and Massa. Qualifying was a mixed bag for Mercedes GP this week. Nico Rosberg took sixth spot behind the top 3 teams, while Schumacher finished last in the top ten shootout after squeezing in the third round. This was a bit disappointing for him after finishing in the top 5 in the practice sessions. Schumacher suffered a KERS failure in practice 3 that was fixed for the qualifying session but was still 1.2sec off his teammate.

We really like the new CLS. Car is simply hot. It looks good, modern, and edgy out of the box so improving on it is not exactly easy. We think Lorinser did improve on it though with their new body kit. It consists of front and rear bumper add-on pieces, side skirts, a trunk spoiler, roof spoiler, and vented fenders. Usually we aren't fans of the Lorinser fenders but in this application they don't even look all that bad. Overall, a very nice take on the new CLS. ...Published on 07-22-2011 03:19 AM
Yes, the Mercedes SLS roadster is one hot ride. Here is a bit of a refresher from the official reveal. The car has the same drivetrain as the coupe with the exact same transmission and motor, no changes. The folding soft top adds only a 40 kilogram weight penalty. Mercedes juxtaposes the coupe against the convertible in the video for some very cool footage, hard to decide which one to like more.

This is rather interesting. Schumacher has been criticized heavily in his comeback as he is not performing as expected and outperformed routinely by 26 year old teammate Nico Rosberg. Schumacher is under contract for 3 years total which means he has another year if he wants it. The comments from Mercedes GP president Ross Brawn are a bit troubling though as he stated, "He has a three-year contract with Mercedes, and we are very happy with him. But if he feels that he doesn't want to do it anymore, then we need to talk about it. You can't force somebody to do something." We have no idea where those comments came from but perhaps Schumacher has lost some heart? Something definitely isn't right at Mercedes GP as Brawn also stated, "Perhaps the situation would be a little easier for Michael if he had a teammate who was not so incredibly strong. But both can learn many things from each other, and everyone is up to the challenge.”

Well, the rumors about the new naturally aspirated 5.5 liter were true. The SLK55 will be getting an M157 5.5 liter variant but it will be missing the twin turbos. Bummer? We think so, but we all know the reason for it. The SLK with the twin turbo V8 would have simply stomped everything else in the lineup silly so this move is really to protect the other cars. A detuned twin turbo motor that could be uncorked similar to how the detuned C63 can be opened up with a tune is what we would want but this should still be a good amount of power. ...Published on 07-20-2011 07:31 AM
Always good to see these kind of comparison videos. We like real world, head to head, results. The camera car is a 2011 C63 AMG that has Gintani headers and OE Tuning Stage 2 ECU tune. The other C63 features MBH headers and an ASGC Stage 2 tune. Both cars are on 91 octane pump gas. There are several runs mostly from low speeds. The runs all have the OE Tuning car pulling quite hard. We aren't sure why the disparity is quite so large but great to see a real world comparison.

Now, to begin we just want to say we would paint the pieces and not leave the car like this. But, what this scheme does for us is show off pretty well the pieces that Renntech changes with their widebody C63 kit. Yes, it's aggressive but not overboard. The carbon pieces really make the car look mean and flow well. This car has the rear diffuser in carbon fiber along with the front and rear widebody pieces. RennTech states the widebody package starts at $3,750 but realistically you are looking at $15k to replicate this with the full array of widebody pieces. ...Published on 07-18-2011 07:49 AM
Remember the story we brought you about the 15 finalists who would compete to win a real life Mercedes SLS AMG? Well, the contest is over and a 24 year old Spanish student by the name of Marco Calvo was the winner. The 15 competitors were under the instruction of former DTM driver Bern Schneider as well was David Coulthard (former Mercedes F1 driver and current DTM driver). Marco beat out the other 14 drivers and gets to take home an SLS AMG. This round of DTM racing was unlike any other. For the first time ever, DTM did a knockout racing competition set in a stadium. Odd? Yes, kind of. The video below will give you a better idea of what this looked like but basically on the first day drivers set their times. Then the field was cut and on the second day of racing the top 8 drivers from Audi and Mercedes were pitted against each other in knock-out races for a 16 car field. The SLR really does not need anything done to it to get more attention. Here is an owner who went overboard. Yes, seems this would be vehicle belonging to someone from the Middle East. Surprising, I know. A little bit of research points to Dubai as where the car is registered. It does not look terrible but just seems like a shame to do this to a vehicle that deserves classy modification. This is a McLaren SLR after all. Been itching for an upgrade to your SLS AMG? Of course you have. Some may say $8,200 is a lot of money and well, they are right. These headers have 200 cell cats built into them which explains part of the cost. Honestly, hard to justify $8,200 on headers considering the 63 AMG header market but the SLS is a lower production vehicle than say a C63 with a much higher price tag. The new M278 twin turbo V8 powered Mercedes vehicles are going to have a lot of the previous generation 63 AMG owners scratching their heads when they can't pull away from them at a stoplight. The new 550 models are just about as fast as the previous M156 based 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8's. Case and point, Car and Driver hit 12.8@112 in the 2012 CLS550. In the 2007 CLS63 AMG, they hit 12.6@114. Oh, the new CLS550 is also lighter by almost 200 pounds than the previous generation W219 CLS63 AMG. ...Published on 07-14-2011 02:56 AM
A month ago we brought you CLS550 M278 twin turbo dyno results. That dyno was from a rear wheel drive car. Insideline did a dyno test of the 4Matic CL550 and the results are similar yet higher than the the numbers OE Tuning hit in the rear wheel drive CLS550. Since the 2011 CL550 is all wheel drive, Insideline could not use their usual dynojet and instead used GMG's AWD Mustang dyno. ...Published on 07-12-2011 03:51 PM
This is part 2 of the BenzBoost visit to Weistec Engineering (Part I here). I was fortunate to be able to sample the supercharger installed on BenzBoost member ecampbell's car. As posted previously, the car hit 551 whp on a dynojet and I was told by Steve that the car is a bit stronger now but has not yet been re-dyno'd. The car has been upgraded to the Stage 2 setup which includes their fuel system upgrades. Alonso won his first race this year in his Ferrari. It was a special victory for the team, They won their first race here 60 years ago. Alonso capitalized on a botched pit stop which saw him pass Vettel, who was the race leader. Vettel finished second after Team Red Bull told Webber, who came in third to back off, which prevented him from passing Vettel for second place. Hamilton came in third mear inches ahead of Massa. Rosberg finished 6th after dropping to 12th place at the start, who had a relatively quiet race. Schumacher, who started 13th, worked his way up to 9th place, On lap 9 he made contact with Kobayashi after trying to pass him and lost his front wing. After getting a new wing and swapping to dry soft tires, he climbed back up to 7th place, but then was slapped with a 10 sec stop and go penalty for his collision earlier. Prior Design has released a new body kit for the W215 CL. It consists of a front bumper, side skirts, rear bumper, trunk spoiler, and front fenders. Everything looks pretty good except for the front fenders which we could do without. Probably the same with the trunk spoiler. Maybe they just need to grow on us? All mounting hardware is included and they are TUV certified. ...
