The N54 cylinder head is not exactly what one would call BMW's best work and it was never designed with top end power in mind. There is room for improvement in breathing up top and this is a large benefit for N54 owners who switch to a larger turbo such as an aftermarket single turbo conversion. This particular N54 motor has such a single turbo setup and as you can see it benefits up top greatly from the VAC Stage 3 cylinder head. ...

The entry level German car sector is starting to get a bit boring. Why? Because everyone has the same engine philosophy. All three of these cars feature a 2.0 liter turbocharged and direct injected motor. The Mercedes CLA250 4Matic and Audi A3 2.0 Quattro both offer dual clutch transmissions and both route power to all four wheels. BMW does not offer a dual clutch transmission in the 2-Series (yet) and the 228i is rear wheel drive. ...

Swedish BimmerBoost member Teddy has a 2007 E91 335d wagon. Teddy's wagon is pure awesomeness. You can follow his build thread here but essentially he added a front mount intercooler, tuned the motor, lowered it, and the result is what you see here. Now since Teddy is from Europe he gets all the cool diesel BMW toys we do not in the United States (no six cylinder diesel wagons for us anymore among other diesels) not to mention that BMW thinks the American market hates wagons. ...

Two tuned twin turbo German V8's going at it on the highway here. The F13 BMW M6 coupe is the camera car. It features a Stage 2 tune from PP-Performance along with their downpipes and an Akrapovic rear section. The E63 AMG is the 4Matic all wheel drive facelift model and it has a tune from Gorilla racing and aftermarket downpipes. The M6 is lighter by roughly 400 pounds and sends its power to the rear wheels through a dual clutch transmission meaning on paper it has the advantage in this type of race. ...

Active Autowerke's supercharger kits for the E9X M3 S65 V8 motor are very solid kits paired with solid tuning. As these are kits, you can buy the supercharger from Active Autowerke and have it installed or install it yourself using the supplied tune from Active Autowerke. The tune is designed by default to be safe and accommodate pump fuel for your location. That also means it is one size fits all and not tailored specifically to your car and its modifications (such as an exhaust system or meth injection). ...

The whole world knows the BMW X7 is on the way and will be assembled in the United States. Engine choices will likely mirror the X5 and X6 but the X7 will be bigger and heavier. If one were to guess just how much this behemoth will weigh the ~5700 pound range of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class which will be its main rival is likely a good ballpark. We have an idea of what it will weigh and what motors it will have, but what will it look like? ...

If you were upset about the M3 losing the V8 you are likely going to be even more angry about it losing the inline-6. As BMW continues to reduce displacement across the board in favor of smaller turbo motors its iconic M models are not immune. That is already seen in the new M3/M4 but BMW's head of project management over at M stated a four-cylinder motor for the next generation M3 and M4 models is likely. ...

With modern dual clutch transmissions we are seeing a big evolution in how tuners approach platforms equipped with these transmissions. You may get an ECU tune for your DSG equipped car and be making quite a bit more horsepower and torque but torque limits placed in the computer controlling the transmission will prevent you from getting all that torque to the ground. Manufacturers obviously set these limits to protect the components so they do not see an increase in warranty claims. ...

Mercedes fans will be quick to point out that the W205 generation C63 AMG is coming and the brand new F82 M4 is being compared to a car about to be replaced. They are right but considering that the new C63 AMG is not out the C63 AMG 507 is the best choice available from AMG for this comparison. The 507 denoting that the car has 507 horsepower exceeding that of the optional P31 performance package which is rated at 481. ...

Congratulations to BimmerBoost member aflatau who managed to improve on his previous 701 wheel horsepower pull with a a 753 wheel horsepower pull setting a new peak N54 horsepower record in the process. This exceeds one of the previous N54 horsepower records set by Vargas Turbo Technology at 725 wheel horsepower. It is important to note that this record was set on a Dynomite dyno while Vargas used a Dynojet. ...

The first drive's from journalists sampling the new 2015 F80 M3 are starting to come in. Yes, the M3 is available as a sedan only but no point whining about the death of the M3 coupe here as that discussion is over with. Steve Sutcliffe of AutoCar got his hands on the the new M car which has slightly more power but much more torque down low from the turbocharged S55B30 (after the turbo lag) than the previous generation naturally aspirated high revving S65 V8. What did he think of it? ...

BMW is taking a lot of flack from enthusiasts lately and rightfully so. The Ultimate Driving Machine company is doing everything except for producing Ultimate Driving Machines. BMW seems preoccupied with electrics and front wheel drives completely forgetting its core principles of producing balanced cars that are fun to drive. With the M2 coming and the next generation 6-Series supposedly losing 500+ pounds maybe things are looking up with a lightweight and fun to drive Z2 roadster as a successor to the Z3? ...

If you had to see it to believe it, here it is. BMW will produce an M2 variant of the 2-Series and bridge the narrow gap between the F22 M235i and F82 M4. BMW for whatever reason is giving the M cars their own chassis codes these days and the M2 will be known as the F87 platform. The M2 obviously can not step on the toes of the M4 so by default it will have less than the 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque that the S55B30 puts out. ...

Good runs here showing a single turbo N54 335i up against a C5 Z06 on the highway. The 335i belongs to a BimmerBoost member and features a bottom mount Precision 6466 turbocharger with 25 psi on E85. Claimed power output in the video for the 335i is 680 wheel horsepower but it sure does not look like the car is running with that much power in this video. The Z06 features a bolt on, aftermarket cam, E85 ethanol, and enough giggle juice to make 555 wheel horsepower (if sandbagging is not at play). ...

BMW does not play fair when it comes it professional racing. When BMW does not get its way, the Motorsport division simply quits. This started back in 1999 when BMW first announced they were bringing a V8 powered E46 M3 to race in the American Le Mans GT2 class despite BMW not selling an E46 M3 with V8 power. BMW scoured the rulebook for a loophole to allow them to beat Porsche and they found it. BMW only won a single race in the 2000 season with a inline-6 powered E46 M3. ...
