    • DCT Build Part VII - Taking the BMW E92 M3 DCT to the next level, 800+ wheel horsepower clutch disc capacity

You have seen the DCT taken apart, what it looks like inside, worn clutch discs, and brand new higher capacity clutch discs made. The new discs handle 600+ and 700+ whp respectively. With my power goals, SSP has decided to build a clutch pack that is beyond anything developed at this time for the DCT. What is the power goal? Well, it is beyond what is currently available and SSP is currently developing a clutch disc pack capable of over 800 wheel horsepower.

      How is this being done?

The current clutch discs are of a thicker material than the stock discs. However, the stock clutch pack has 9 discs in it. By increasing the number of clutch discs they are going to increase the maximum torque capacity. By going to a thicker material and increasing the total number of discs to 11, the DCT in the BMW M3 will be taken to a level no one previously thought was possible. This is going to be similar to the GTR 1000 hp clutch setup by SSP (pictured) but the GTR uses more clutch discs albeit smaller, thinner discs.

What else is being done and how much time will it take?

The DCT is going to receive a cooling system based on what SSP has done with the GTR's. This will be a DCT specific application and will be great for the guys who track. No more overheats, no more staying away from the track on hot days. Look for a separate build thread specifically for the cooling system in the next few weeks. Regarding the time period, expect completion next month with the car returning fully assembled and capable of handling the increased power.

Being you will be the second after Alex's car to be a stroker. just more things can go wrong. I would for now just stick with the stage 3 kit whenever it gets finalized and see how that goes. it would prob be easier just to switch to the Procharger set up after if you want than stroking it for similar power gains. but then again I could be wrong. just haven't heard much info on Alex's stroker, havent even heard if it has a blower strapped to it.

I really don't see why stroking it would complicate things all that much. The additional displacement should pay dividends.

If I'm going to do it just best to do it now. I'm seriously considering it.

Nope, just increases piston speed which usually means cars don't rev as high.

However, the m3 has VERY low stroke. It is almost begging for an increase.

I might just have to do it since the YSI will be maxed quickly looks like.

What stroker kit do you want to use? RDSport or Dinan?

Heh, neither. No kit is necessary, just a crank.

I say stroke it! With as big a blower as your wanting to run your gonna want all the low end torque you can get. A good stroker will help you enjoy the car more as a DD and make you not need to rev it as high.

We'll see, I'll probably do it. I'm concerned about the rod angle with boost. I just don't know too much about that aspect.

Spoke with Kris guys. Transmission is all together just needs to get fluid and be tested.

Will be shipped back in the next week or later if he decides to drive it down himself. Either way, car will be back this month and we will have the shipping details worked out in the next few days.

He should be sending pics soon.

Huh, after all this technical info i never asked the simplest question: What's the torque limitation of the new unit?

We aren't quite sure but these discs have been tested in other applications up to around 800.

If I manage to wear them out (I'll try) they are going to put in the new 1000+ capable discs they developed for the GTR.

Not yet, I don't know. I have an opportunity to do a prior design widebody kit on my SL and the money could go there. I have to think.

        Sticky,

SL already has sexy lines, I would not change the lines of SL.

Have you pondered about buying a crank of GTS off BMW AG directly and paying less?

GTS has 4.4 L engine so you may check thatClick here to enlarge
