• DCT Build Part VII - Taking the BMW E92 M3 DCT to the next level, 800+ wheel horsepower clutch disc capacity

      You have seen the DCT taken apart, what it looks like inside, worn clutch discs, and brand new higher capacity clutch discs made. The new discs handle 600+ and 700+ whp respectively. With my power goals, SSP has decided to build a clutch pack that is beyond anything developed at this time for the DCT. What is the power goal? Well, it is beyond what is currently available and SSP is currently developing a clutch disc pack capable of over 800 wheel horsepower.

      How is this being done?

      The current clutch discs are of a thicker material than the stock discs. However, the stock clutch pack has 9 discs in it. By increasing the number of clutch discs they are going to increase the maximum torque capacity. By going to a thicker material and increasing the total number of discs to 11, the DCT in the BMW M3 will be taken to a level no one previously thought was possible. This is going to be similar to the GTR 1000 hp clutch setup by SSP (pictured) but the GTR uses more clutch discs albeit smaller, thinner discs.

      What else is being done and how much time will it take?

      The DCT is going to receive a cooling system based on what SSP has done with the GTR's. This will be a DCT specific application and will be great for the guys who track. No more overheats, no more staying away from the track on hot days. Look for a separate build thread specifically for the cooling system in the next few weeks. Regarding the time period, expect completion next month with the car returning fully assembled and capable of handling the increased power.

        Have you considered the Procharger F1 or F1D?

        They are much more evolved for applications like this and they can spin both ways which means you can mount it wherever you want.

        Yes the VE of this engine is so high it's flowing as much air as a 5 or 6 liter. Plus the redline is high, so you are moving a lot of air because of all this. 8800 RPM will make it worse, you need a bigger blower if you intend to boost more than 17-18 psi at 8800 RPM.

        I have, just don't know if they would be a pain in the rear to switch too. Also, Gintani prefers the Vortech blowers for whatever reason. Might not be a bad idea to call up Procharger and see if they would be interested in donating a blower to the cause.

        You think an F1-D? I was thinking F1-A?

        Which one would allow me up to 25 psi if I wanted?

        You don't think it's too big? I don't even know if that $#@! will fit. That would be one MEAN ass blower though. I don't like to even be close in races, I want to destroy people.

        But I think you CAN have a blower thats too big, the parasitic loss at the low end will exacerbate the already poor low end torque of the engine coupled with the lower compression and that will suck.

        But top end is what you want anyway, right?

        Any of the F1 class prochargers can handle the flow and power you need...

        F1-A is a good choice in my opinion, intercooler it if you can, with meth injection.. and you can hit 1000 whp easy.

        Yes it will.

        As soon as you increase the displacement of the engine you increase port velocities.
        When you increase port velocity you reduce VE if the cams are not tuned for this.

        If you stroke the engine, get your heads ported.

        So you would choose the F1-A out of any of them? If I could do the F1-R should I?

        These will hit 25+ psi?

        What about stroking to mitigate the low end loss?

        Wow, great news! I have been out with some major surgery to an old football injury. Love the "Go big, or go home" motto. I already bought my V7, so I plan on going that route. Plus, as mentioned here, I followed my heads porting with FI cams. But those Prochargers are big mo'fo's! Glad to se things are going nice and and slow and done RIGHT. That is what matters. There is a reason why Confucius says, " He who waits with grace, gets biggest fortune cookie".
