• DCT Build Part VII - Taking the BMW E92 M3 DCT to the next level, 800+ wheel horsepower clutch disc capacity

You have seen the DCT taken apart, what it looks like inside, worn clutch discs, and brand new higher capacity clutch discs made. The new discs handle 600+ and 700+ whp respectively. With my power goals, SSP has decided to build a clutch pack that is beyond anything developed at this time for the DCT. What is the power goal? Well, it is beyond what is currently available and SSP is currently developing a clutch disc pack capable of over 800 wheel horsepower.

      How is this being done?

The current clutch discs are of a thicker material than the stock discs. However, the stock clutch pack has 9 discs in it. By increasing the number of clutch discs they are going to increase the maximum torque capacity. By going to a thicker material and increasing the total number of discs to 11, the DCT in the BMW M3 will be taken to a level no one previously thought was possible. This is going to be similar to the GTR 1000 hp clutch setup by SSP (pictured) but the GTR uses more clutch discs albeit smaller, thinner discs.

What else is being done and how much time will it take?

The DCT is going to receive a cooling system based on what SSP has done with the GTR's. This will be a DCT specific application and will be great for the guys who track. No more overheats, no more staying away from the track on hot days. Look for a separate build thread specifically for the cooling system in the next few weeks. Regarding the time period, expect completion next month with the car returning fully assembled and capable of handling the increased power.

Earl. Get a life dude. Sticky will figure out life without your help. You are obviously jaded on the topic. This whole $#@!storm started because people came in to kick sticky while he was down. So he $#@! slapped them with some insults that obviously struck home. People are so insecure it's hilarious. Then you guys start micro analyzing his life choices. Grow the $#@! up.

Earl has a nice life no doubt. I'm very happy with my life. This has nothing to do with getting the trans situation resolved.

Wait, is his life better or worse than the wood side baller!? I need to know who is in first place here! I must know! LOL. Earl should enjoy it then, focus on cars and not on the choices Sticky has made or the way he chooses to handle his life. People have a real convenient memory when it comes to these threads and sticky. Let me educate some of you. Money and material items have nothing to do with true success. But, I've been poor and I've been rich. Rich is a lot better ; )

If there's a real solution to the DCTs, I will most likely trade my car in for a 335IS Click here to enlarge

Wow, this thread has gone bananas.

Honestly, it would be great if someone would do a Cliff's Notes of the relevant DCT info/timeline.

I'm not going back to look it all up, but from memory, I think it goes something like this:

        1. Sticky buys a DCT e9x M3.
        2. Sticky puts a blower on his M3.
        3. Sticky does a ton of drag-strip passes with his blown M3, and completely trashes his stock OEM DCT. Can't buy just replacement clutches, because it's all too new. It's either buy a whole new DCT from the dealer for crazy $$$, or find someone to rebuild the stocker that got trashed.
        4. Sticky investigates rebuild options. No one has done one yet. No one is particularly interested in doing one, either, but SSP offers to rebuild it on their own dime if they get the R&D out of the deal.
        5. SSP takes a looong time to rebuild Sticky's DCT.
        6. Gintani takes a looong time to build Sticky's motor and install his newer, bigger blower kit.
        7. Once all of the hardware side is completed, Gintani starts dyno tuning Sticky's car. The brand-new SSP clutches hold WOT dyno pulls on pump fuel, and allegedly set a new pump-fuel record for an e9x M3. Then race-fuel tuning starts, and the DCT starts slipping.
        8. Sticky reaches out to SSP to let them know, and SSP decides they no longer want to be involved with this ongoing project anymore.
        9. A nasty back-and-forth series of posts breaks out here on GB between SSP and Sticky.

^^^Does that basically sum it up, or am I missing any critical steps so far?

That's basically it although I did a ton of drag passes before the blower. People forget I had the NA record too.

Although I would also say SSP never got the project right in the first place despite taking their sweet time.

It's not the issue with the clutches holding however. It's the trans shifting gears randomly, going into neutral, just not doing what it should. We found out why.

That sounds like a software/coding issue...? TCU not talking to the hardware properly and vice versa?
