• DCT Build Part VII - Taking the BMW E92 M3 DCT to the next level, 800+ wheel horsepower clutch disc capacity

      You have seen the DCT taken apart, what it looks like inside, worn clutch discs, and brand new higher capacity clutch discs made. The new discs handle 600+ and 700+ whp respectively. With my power goals, SSP has decided to build a clutch pack that is beyond anything developed at this time for the DCT. What is the power goal? Well, it is beyond what is currently available and SSP is currently developing a clutch disc pack capable of over 800 wheel horsepower.

      How is this being done?

      The current clutch discs are of a thicker material than the stock discs. However, the stock clutch pack has 9 discs in it. By increasing the number of clutch discs they are going to increase the maximum torque capacity. By going to a thicker material and increasing the total number of discs to 11, the DCT in the BMW M3 will be taken to a level no one previously thought was possible. This is going to be similar to the GTR 1000 hp clutch setup by SSP (pictured) but the GTR uses more clutch discs albeit smaller, thinner discs.

      What else is being done and how much time will it take?

      The DCT is going to receive a cooling system based on what SSP has done with the GTR's. This will be a DCT specific application and will be great for the guys who track. No more overheats, no more staying away from the track on hot days. Look for a separate build thread specifically for the cooling system in the next few weeks. Regarding the time period, expect completion next month with the car returning fully assembled and capable of handling the increased power.

        Last I checked Drew tried to run the clutch upgrades I pioneered only to end up having to buy a new trans.

        Save your talk on the build time for when you do something of merit. One thing we can all agree on is YOU aren't running with anyone serious whether your car is in pieces or not.

        Back to the topic of this thread, yes, we all know you volunteered your trans for SSP to develop upgrades - upgrades SSP told us you got for free in return. Seems pretty generous, not many shops do that (give upgrades away for literally free, just for being a development vehicle). Funny that you didn't mention it, and would've gone unknown until they let the cat outta the bag. Regardless, it absolutely sucks that you've had to wait so long to get your car done, but reading between the lines in this thread, it frankly sounds like a LOT of the downtime of late is a result of your tuner, not your trans builder. Why they don't seem motivated to wrap it up, I don't know, but it seems like it gets back-burnered whenever they have more profitable work in their backlog, which is probably almost all of the time.

        Back to the trans, presumably, Drew had to buy those SSP clutch packs - and maybe they had something to do with his electronic issues, or maybe it was coincidence? Not sure if anyone knows... if they do, they're not talking. All we seem to know is that he's back to an OEM transmission, which seems to be enough to beat up on a Stage 2 Weistec C63 pretty handily.

        SSP got someone to donate a 70k+ car that they held for over 18 months. The generosity was on my part as I get idiots like yourself complaining about the build time because they delivered it far later than they should have. Now they have parts to sell based on disassembly of my 15k+ trans and get to sell them and make money while my project was delayed for a year. What, my time and car is not valuable?

        What cat out of the bag? You could have called Chris any time. I focused on the build not my personal expenses which are none of your business. I also have to pay for a lot of parts and labor that was not delivered. Not to mention SSP wrote that to deflect criticism for taking so damn long. Simply, oh, it's free so who cares how long it takes was the mentality.

        Oh please do elaborate how it is my tuners fault. I think I have a better grasp on my own build than you and SSP took one year too long and I was way too nice about it.

        Now kindly STFU and go wow people with a build of your own as if anyone gives a crap about your C32 or other outdated cars you are doing nothing with. Read more, hate less.

        Let's see him take it to the strip, running from a roll is easier on the trans which is why he is doing it.

        That's pretty hard to beat lol. The car is super light compared to sticky's, one advantage for z06. Sticky has DCT which is the advantage of the m3. Sticky would probably need 800whp to beat the car by a car or two..
