    • Car and Driver 2014 Lightning Lap results leaked early - Porsche 918 Spyder the quickest around VIR

The Car and Driver Lightning Lap is one of the most interesting comparisons of the year from the major automotive publications. Car and Driver essentially takes a small group of the hottest handling cars on the market from various price points and times their laps around the Virginia International Raceway track. The full breakdown comes in the October issue and Car and Driver will post their results online at some later point this year.

Here is a leak showing a quick overview of the results and there are some eye opening times. Now, VIR is not a small track and power tends to dominate. That may explain why the E63 AMG S managed a quicker lap than the BMW M4. The E63 obviously has the power advantage but a 4500 pound sedan outlapping a car a thousand pounds lighter that is not giving up all the much in acceleration and has the quicker shifting transmission? That is a head scratcher.

The Porsche 918 Spyder coming out on top is no surprise. At over a million dollars, it better. The Camaro Z28 beating the Porsche 911 Turbo S and Corvette Stingray is also no surprise but certainly impressive. What Chevrolet accomplished with the Camaro chassis is well worthy of respect.

The other results are all below. Further details will come once Car and Driver sells their magazines and posts the full results online:

Would like to see how the new mustang (4cyl and 5.0) and the new golf-r would do.

Also, I'd love to be able to take a fiesta ST out for a spin without a pesky salesman in the car. Seems like it would be fun as all hell to throw that thing around.

Very impressive for Stingray. Wish the *overall* quality a tad better though. Oh well, maybe wait couple more years :-) And wtf w Cayman S outruns RS7? lol

Don't see why that is surprising.

Big surprise for me is the results on the M235i, CLA 45 and STI.. expected a much quicker pace out of the STI and less time between the BMW and AMG.

Surprised the RS7 was able to compete a lap without rolling over. That in and of itself is impressive.

Wonder what a P1 would do, probably almost identical. Track tests in Europe seem to put them neck and neck. Honestly, the 918 is just a work of art in every way.

Nice to see the F12 putting down a decent time as well. Of course with 730 hp it should be up there.

So car and driver can get their hands on T/A but motor trend cannot. Interesting! It's nice to see the TA give Godzilla a run for its money esp since the T/A is manual. (I'm assuming).

The Viper takes a hell of a lot more skill to extract performance out of. You put a driver in it familiar with racing Vipers and it should always win.

The m4 is lower on that list than I would have expected

Same. CTS V-Sport over the M235i? Interesting.

Z/28 driving circles around the F12.... that's funny. Only slower because of the HP difference (compare highest speeds).

CTSV over M235i because of miracle suspension. Those magnetic shocks are the ticket for 5000lb car.

If you look at the speeds the F12 is doing it all with power whereas the Camaro doing it all with finesse. Camaro? Finesse?

The caddy has too much power for the 2 on this track

I sense the sarcasm. But the CTS is actually the lightest car in the segment. Compared with the 5, A6, E.

        Less than 4,000 lbs.

Something people may not know is that VIR was completely repaved before this years Lightening Lap. As nice as it is to see the GTR do well - I have to be unbiased and state that a repaved track can have serious affects on your lap time. As it stands the NISMO is fourth fastest - but I would need to see a car from the older tests on the new track to see how (if any) the new track paving has affected times. The ACR Viper would be a great candidate. If the times were found to be significantly off - meaning an ACR which is currently 3rd fastest is (significantly) even faster on the newly paved track surface - then most of the kudos for many of these cars are moot and a new list would have to be created (one before the paving and one after). Who won and by how much versus each other for this years competition is of course unaffected as they are all on the same track on the same day.

^100% on comparing lap times between different years. Didn't know about the repaving but seeing that the 335is (2012) ran 3 seconds SLOWER than the normal 335i coupe (2007, both lightening lap tests) was a giant eye opener. Goes to show you can't just ignorantly compare lap times from car x and car y like everyone on YouTube does.. different days, different conditions

Watching people compare numbers as if they are set in stone is the most frustrating aspect of automotive forums.

Also keep in mind, the Z28 is running 305s at all four corners. It's running more tire than any car in this list.

That is why it is so awesome. GM had the balls to put a 305 square setup on it from factory.

The Z28 is now dominating the Continental Tire Series this year.
