• There will not be a 2015/2016 F36 based BMW M4 Gran Coupe, BMW M decides against it

BMW officially released the 2015 F36 4-Series Gran Coupe earlier this year. This of course led to speculation (some sites reported it as confirmed) as to whether BMW would produce an M variant using the F36 chassis. An M4 Gran Coupe would obviously somewhat overlap with the F80 M3 but the same could be said for overlap between the M6 Gran Coupe and the BMW F10 M5. The market already proved that there is room for four door sedans and four door 'coupes' as the Mercedes E-Class and CLS-Class demonstrate.

So why no M4 Gran Coupe? It is not because the idea does not make sense it is due to logistics. M executive Jorg Bartels stated the following regarding production of an M4, “That is a negative. It was definitely considered, but there is no plan to build an M4 Gran Coupe. Part of the reason is expected production volume, but also the 4 Series Gran Coupe is built in a different factory to both the 3 Series (sedan) and 4 Series (coupe), so there is a lot of challenges there.”

Since the F36 is not built in the same factory as the F32 4-Series and F30 3-Series it seems BMW is not willing to justify the cost. The M3 and M4 roll out of the same factory so machines, transmission, engines, etc., are all in the same spot. Moving these aspects for an M4 Gran Coupe variant does not make business sense to them. If the F36 was assembled in the same spot, chances are we would see an M4 Gran Coupe.

Why did nobody at BMW think of this in advance when choosing which models were produced at which plants? Who knows but an M4 Gran Coupe is apparently not an important enough model to justify BMW making any changes.

I'm ok with this...the 6 GC and 5 are fairly differentiated, however the 4 GC and 3 are so similar that I really don't see the point in it at all. I'm kind of hoping actually that they hardly sell any and decide to kill it. Kind of a pointless car, although if people want them might as well give it to them.

Just don't think they can release a M4 Gran Coupe and price it less than the M4.

Gran Coupe pricing structure across the board is all f'd up.

With the M5, M6, M6GC. The M6GC is the top of the range car. Same with the 6er, the 6GC is the more expensive car. 4 and 4GC are the opposite.

Dude, we had a guy bring his 6 GC for some work after his shop botched the N55 stage 2 install. I honestly didn't even know what it was at first. Those cars are seriously bad ass.

Good move BMW.... The amount of m buyers that want a grand coupe would be very small...it's a waste of money.

No lol. 6 is 6 and 5 is 5. 4 wants to be 3 though, so its just easier tocall it 3. Click here to enlarge

The 4GC does look better than the 3. Also the rear hatch style trunk is much more useful.

If I had to choose, I would rather have a M4GC than a M3. But in reality I would get neither and opt for the M4.

Couldn't have put it better. a 4GC would have been impossible to screw up.

Weight penalty for the 4 GC is about 165 lb. over the coupe. It doesn't make sense.

Also, as I recall, the M4 and M3 are made in separate factories according to at least one source.
