    • OE Tuning M278 bi-turbo V8 Stage I and Stage II with downpipes dyno results on a Mercedes-Benz C218 CLS550

The M278 at 4.6 liters is smaller than its M157 5.5 liter M157 sibling although they are both based on a similar architecture. Both the M157 and M278 are twin turbo V8's and both are direct injected. Yes, that also means both are very tunable motors. The M278 sees great gains from tuning as OE Tuning demonstrates with the Dyno results below on a C218 CLS550 (CLS500 overseas).

The baseline dyno shows 384.9 wheel horsepower at 4709 rpm. With just the Stage I tune this increases to 469.8 horsepower at the wheels at the same rpm. Torque increases by just over 100 lb-ft at the wheels at the same rpm. The torque gain lower in the rpm range is even higher.

With the addition of downpipes and a Stage II tune gains at 5376 rpm are 102.7 horsepower at the wheels. What bout torque down low? 648 lb-ft at the wheels at 3829 rpm compared to the stock 469.9 lb-ft. That is almost a difference of 200 lb-ft.

Now, these graphs show Dynojet estimate horsepower. What Dynamometer OE Tuning is using here is not known but they used pump gas. Hopefully they will be able to provide further details on the dyno but the M278 is showing significant gains with tuning and bolt ons.

Impressive gains. These may end up being a tuning bargain with a few more years of Mercedes depreciation under their belt.

So OE Tuning's Stage 1 returns the same performance (roughly) as the RennTECH and Kleemann tunes with downpipes? Wow!

I wouldn't come to that conclusion. Different dynos show different numbers.

I don't know what kind of dyno this is but all of these guys are going to end up roughly in the same spot.

I just picked up one of these and hope to see some nice gains with the tune.
