• ESS supercharged E90 M3 vs. Kenne Bell Gt500

ESS VT2-600 Supercharged M3 takes on a Kenne Bell Mustang GT500. The M3 owner claims the car is putting out well over 500 whp, clearly, it isn't.

I don't quite understand how some of you are saying an ESS 600hp kit would only trap around 123, if some bolt on NA cars are doing 118-119. It just doesn't add up.

I'm just getting back into the BMW scene after a few years vacationing over at the dark side (Audi Click here to enlarge )....so help me understand this. When you see the ESS cars running in Sweden (GTBOARD) or Russia, they seem to hold their own very well. Maybe this KB car was just really strong, and or the drivers of either cars weren't "equal"Click here to enlarge. DCT is a definite advantage, especially if you're not a great driver...

Between Gintani and ESS....is there that big of a difference in power? Drew's car is stout (Hi Drew!).

I think that is the whole point some people try to get across. ESS seems to think their kits are making the most power.

And that they are conservative and safe, which without meth for added safety on 91 is not necessarily the case.

Only one bolt on car did that trap, at SAC, in the winter, with weight stripped out, remember that.

The KB car is quite strong, that is true.

Yes, Gintani Stage 2's are putting out more power than the ESS kits, especially on 91 octane. We are talking low 500's vs. high 500's wheel.

There are faster and slower KB cobras. Either way, would be a good run and yes, his car would be a more appropriate match as would yours.

What's up with you not posting any details on your wheels?
ill post soon. im doing alignment and corner balance this wkend since i installed coils, then another post. not on m3post, too many haters over there that cant appreciate a shiny lightweight wheel

I own a KB 2.8 Shelby, that makes 721whp, and there is a world of difference between that and any blown only M3. My car has run 134 on pump gas. One secret though, make the Cobra run 4-5 times and watch the heatsoak make it a better raceClick here to enlarge

Heatsoak is definitely a problem with those positive displacement blowers, but 134 mph is pretty impressive!

I've run 130 mph with mine before some changes, I think it would have been a good race!

Where do you live? Can you find a similarly setup car in the Los Angeles area for some friendly runs?

        From the Cobra:

        "ey Guys,
I had the privilege of running an ESS Tuning M3 the other night.

To start this off, I'm a BMW owner, enthusiast and have owned 5 M cars, with a JB3 135i sitting in my driveway now.

I also own a 2007 Shelby GT500 with Griggs Suspension, and Kenne Bell Supercharger. The car is definitely healthy power-wise with 700 whp 650 wtq. I feel fortunate to have BMW refinement day to day, and raw american muscle on the weekends.

Of course these runs are all in good fun, and not meant to hurt anyone's feelings. And filmed in Mexico

I should note that the M3's owner is a nice guy with a sweeeet &ss ride, and like me has all kinds people talking and speculating about his car and how it would match up against this that and the other... The burden of owning a bad&ss ride...
My hats off to him for building questionably the sweetest E9X M3 I've seen to date.

        Alright! Detroit vs Munich!!

Race notes: 3rd gear roll. M3 no passenger, GT500 160lbs passenger."

your forgetting some of the basic rules:
RESPECT MORE SPEED - A LOT. EVEN 3 MPH.

If you look at the formula again, you'll note how trap speed shows up as the cube root of power to weight. That's critical to understanding how fast one car is over another. Let's say your car does a 90 mph quarter and the guy who raced you in the other lane ran 71 mph. After the race, he wanders over to you to say the 'race was close'. Your reply: "I could have towed you and still beat you". (This might not be the best way to make friends, but yes, it is TRUE if the cars weigh the same.)

Do the math. (90/71) cubed is 2.04. Yes, the 90 mph car has 2.04 times the power to weight of the slower car. It has 2.04 times the acceleration of the slower car. It's just that the track is a fixed length, and in accelerating to higher speeds, you use up the track quicker. You accelerated to 90 in about 20% less time than he had to accelerate to 71, right?

Bottom line; Down where most of us run, a 3 mph difference between two cars is NOT a race. It was a clear win. There's a full 10% difference between these cars.

Yes I read that but it makes no sense.

How is this the cobra owner who raced the ESS car when the OP in that thread says he is? The guy never answered my questions.

You are forgetting the intake design on the SC changed so there would not have been much of a mph gap, if it all Click here to enlarge

Ya well the car still had more in it too Click here to enlarge I was more referring to my SC M3 vs. that cobra, just mentioning that I ran 130 and I believe it would be a better run.

        Hats off for running, absolutely.

The post history of the guy with the ESS kit regarding how "powerful" it is and all his exaggerated butt dyno claims are part of the reason.

It is a nice car, with solid hardware, and we always give props to guys who go out there and run.
