So how do the performance numbers for the updated V12 look? Well, not all that much different and tough to see a significant improvement. Car and Driver got a rather pathetic 12.6@120 in the 1/4 mile. Why pathetic? Because a 12.6 with all that torque is a horribly slow ET and previous generation 65 AMG models were easily in the 11's on street tires in the 1/4 mile. Somebody at Car and Driver does not know how to launch an AMG.
Car and Driver got a 12.3@121 out of the M157 5.5 liter V8 based 2012 CL63 AMG. Ouch... that car is the same chassis but it weighs slightly less. Car and Driver states the difference is 51 pounds but the difference between the SL65 and SL63 AMG is much larger so come to your own conclusion on their weight testing accuracy. Especially considering the test numbers favor the less powerful V8 with 'only' 563 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque.
Is the CL65 AMG worth the $64,830 penalty over the CL63 AMG? BenzBoost can not think of a reason why it would be.
