    • BMW intends to "crush" the world drifting record with a 40+ mile drift in an F10 M5

This is somewhat cool, somewhat. Basically BMW wants the world drifting record so they intend to get it using a stock F10 M5 with a BMW Performance Driving School instructor (Johan Schwartz) behind the wheel. The current record is apparently 6.95 miles after some confusion which BMW thought it was 3.6 miles. The record belongs to a guy in the UAE who set it at the Yas Marina circuit. So BMW will have their driver attempt to set this record at the Performance Driving School on May 11th.

Basically, this amounts to driving an M5 in a drift on a damp circular track for 40 miles. It's really not all that exiting but it gets BMW exposure and benefits a charity. So there you have it, BMW will drive an M5 on a wet circle for 40 miles. Go Ultimate Driving Machine go.

what would be hilarious: the drift stopping partway through... or too much throttle and the tires exploding

        fingers crossed!!

I've driven on that track as part of my Performance Center Delivery. That skid pad is polished concrete, and it's easy to kick the back end out even when it's dry. So yeah, big f'n deal.

Drifting for 40 miles? Sounds exhausting. What's he gonna do? Engage the drift, set the cruise control, and read a book?

BMW probably will add a software drift mode for this.
