I feel that the electrical car's are not/is not what enthusiest cars are.

Its kind of two birds with one stone though for BMW. High-efficiency to add to their range of cars,and high profit off of flashy cars for people who dont actually care about 'performance' but want looks. And in my opinion, its pretty good looking.

It's a good looking car. It packs in technology. It is finally something high-end.

But seriously, seriously. All this time, money, and development and no real enthusiast version? At the very least an N20?

Although it is debatable whether or not this is a true enthusiast's car, I feel that this car will pioneer the future in eco-friendliness, performance, and functionality. I am all for innovation, and this will make a great DD, perfect for someone who just wants a "nice" and stylish car without having to worry about harming the environment while saving on gas. That being said, I'm sure with new tech like this, it will not be cheap to maintain, but that is a whole different topic.

Agreed at least BMW is doing something. And this will be a hot a seller and their halo car so to speak.

It's just a shame they can't back the looks and technology up with performance on par with that price segment.

Haha, it will make a sick DD! I was thinking more about its fuel efficiency for daily commutes, and the option of 400+hp (more than enough for most people) sports-mode when you want it.

I like it. I love the sound of the engine. Very skeptical about sales though. I doubt it will do well in its segment. As a 60-80k car it would do a lot better and be more likely to sell. Otherwise, I see a sales slump worse than the Z4. Not many people who purchase in this segment are purchasing hybrid variants. For instance Fisker or Tesla. Both beautiful cars, geared towards performance, but the sales are very slow. A 2 seater, 1.5 liter, BMW might turn heads, but I doubt it would make people stretch their pockets.

The initial specs on this thing say it will be 1480kg, about 3260lbs. All those composite materials and that's as light as they can get it? This also raises the question: how light are they truly going to be able to get the F8x M3? Having a 3cyl motor must help offset the weight of the electric motor and batteries... Why is this so heavy?

The batteries probably weigh ALOT. A Tesla model S weighs around 2100kg, that's over 4600 lbs.

So 1480kg is really not bad. But I agree, it doesn't sound groundbreaking.

I wouldn't speculate on M3/M4 weight based on this car. They're not comparable at all.

the Tesla roadster was about 2700lbs, which was very close to the curb weight of the Lotus Elise on which it was based. So if Tesla was able to equal the weight between gas and electric cars, it seems BMWs 3260lbs isn't out of line as I had first suggested. Lighter would be better, obviously.

Well I dont know the data for the US but in Sweden private cars is only responsible for some 3-5% of CO2 emissions, even if all suedes got i8's the improvement would be negletable.

If one wants to save us from CO2 you need to look at meat production and heavy transports, get rid of coal plants etc and go nuclear. Cars are not the problem and cant be the future solution...

what a wimpy motor. there are plenty of high output 2l engines they could use.

I think this is fine at the $150k price point.
