• IND-Distribution and AMS Performance attempting to take the F10 M5 S63tu Twin Turbo V8 to 1000+ horsepower - M5 Alpha with forged internals and big turbos

Everyone knew that turbo motors in M cars meant far more tuning would be taking place as well as some very big gains. Well, AMS Performance of Nissan GT-R Alpha package fame will be applying their expertise to the S63tu V8 in the F10 M5 as well as the F12/F13 M6. The goal is over 1000 horsepower and BimmerBoost does not doubt it will be achieved although obviously the build process, testing, and development is going to take some time.

IND and AMS point out that some of the components in the S63tu are not built with huge aftermarket power gains in mind. No surprise here as BMW just wants the car to last the warranty period so that means the lowest cost components that will suffice for this time period. AMS is not going further into what components they need to replace but obviously there will be a good amount of OEM parts that will not cut it for 1000+ horsepower.

Here are photos of the stock rods, pistons, rings, and wrist pins all of which will obviously be replaced with stronger aftermarket components:

Something interesting to note is that the top of the piston states N63/S63tu. The N63tu and S63tu both share the same compression ratio and with the markings on the piston it sure seems safe to come to the conclusion that the S63tu and N63tu pistons are the exact same thing to save BMW money. Easy to see why this is an area to upgrade with BMW sharing components with less powerful motors and cutting costs. Hey, welcome to the BMW turbo era.

That's it for now, we will all have to wait and see how this develops but considering the results AMS has achieved with the GT-R BimmerBoost certainly is confident the 1000+ hp goal will be reached... eventually.

Video of the M5 on the AMS dnyo below:

Lots of good will come from this business relationship -- The S63 will be in the hands of a very reputable tuner, it'll force a DCT upgrade to be developed to withstand the HP goal, find the short comings of any of the components (breathing for the turbos, IAT cooling, etc) AND do this all before the F3x M3 comes out (which will be great since a lot of the R&D on the S63 motor will probably carry over).

It's going to be great but this is going to be a whole lot of work.

Hell yea it is going to be badass. I'm sure this thing will be a monster without a doubt. One thing I'm wondering as well as @benzy89 brought up. Is this DCT transmission the same found in your M3 @Sticky? I'm sure the gear ratios will be different etc. I'm just wondering this now cause the M5 has 500 crank torque. Either probably has the same DCT trans with different upgraded disc packs from BMW? I can't wait till we get more detail on this build.

The M5 trans is beefed up.

Shep Racing should be able to figure out an upgraded trans setup...he builds AMS's gearboxes for the GTR for very reasonable prices.

I dont doubt the N63/S63 can make serious hp, but someone should point AMS in the direction of the timing chain assembly/oil pump issues as well. Making a reliable setup will ensure a healthy life, as Ive seen timing chain guides prematurely fail/fill up the pan with metal shavings, vanos gear springs breaking/coming apart, all the oiling issues that has plagued this motor.

I hope it doesnt become an issue for them.

After seeing what AMS did with the GTR (specifically the Alpha 12 & Alpha Omega), I'm 100% sure they'll get the F10 M5/F12 M6 to 1,000 HP and keep the setup reliable. Just no guarantees on how much that'll cost you Click here to enlarge Def see this being ~$100k for the complete upgrade (engine, turbos, trans, drivetrain, etc)

this looks mighty promising....and having shep devise a plan of attack on the tranny is definitely the best thing to do with his reputation in the GT-R world...no jab at sticky but im kind of surprised you didnt want shep to work on yours....his reputation in the tranny building is lengendary from what ive heard...building EVO trannies and now what seems like indestructible GT-R trannies

on another note the shaft on those stock connecting rods look REALLY thin...kind of surprised...mine were a little thicker and the callies ones i have in there now are like going from bruce banner rods to world war hulk rods...the pistons im kind of surprised as well but i guess if BMW is trying to save money thats one place they can do it...hope no expense is spared in trying to get this thing to 1000+whp....

        GOOD LUCK AMS and IND

This is pretty badass; however it kind of annoys me that they would jump on this, but not take the N54 seriously. So much potential with a much larger market, but the best they can do is crap out an intercooler. I think that in AMS' hands, the N54 would be much further ahead than it currently is. I guess it's not worthy...

AMS probably didn't take the N54 and it's aftermarket potential seriously when it was initially launched. The might be kicking themselves in the ass now, but they're not going to make the same mistake twice. Since the new turbo Ms have huge aftermarket potential, the S63 Tu is a great motor to do a lot of their foundation R&D before the new M3/M4 comes out. It also helps that anyone who's getting an F10 M5/F12 M6 probably has the money to finance pricey mods like a 1,000HP kit from AMS.

I really doubt AMS even remotely cares about the N54.
