I just had a new motor installed and thus far I've been very impressed with the way it turned out.. I was skeptical to use the used low mileage unit I bought, but it looks like it worked out. My first test drive on my stock tune made me aware of how healthy it actually was

New motor?!?! I don't know if you ever posted what happened, but wow, that is one heck of a repair!!!! Glad to hear it all worked.

I read the E60 M5 Service Manual and it said that the best way to break-in a second hand low mileage S85B50 was to get Evolve Automotive Tubular Headers....BMW's words, not mine, I swear!

LMAO! I literally think about grabbing those tubular headers every single day..

And yes my motor failure I kept under wraps for a while just as a precaution for my warranty company.. I think sticky is the only person I told about it. This new motor is very HEALTHY. I can't tell you how relieved I am to be back behind the wheel.. Them damn f10 528i's were so damn boring lol

I'm all clear now. I just wanted to wait on the bill to get taken care of before I said anything lol..

To summarize my vanos high pressure pump failed and got metal shavings in my oil. I ended up with a spun rod bearing. The dealer says the shavings from the vanos gear teeth are what caused my rod bearing to fail.. Honestly I'll never really know. But $20k+ and 6 months later I'm back on the road. It feels good to be driving my own car again. I literally forgot how good it feels above 8k rpm. It's my drug

Rod bearings are a weakness on the S85. I would suggest replacing them at 50k miles to anyone with that motor. I have another friend that went through it too and had his motor replaced. I guess we need to re-race on our new motors! Lol

Thanks! IIRC he trapped 116 last time out at the track. I trapped 120.19 with a faulty throttle actuator that same night in the same lane. Hopefully we'll both get back out there soon and my car seems to be completely healthy.

New motor pulls nice!

Nice comparison here showing the difference in the top end strength between the S85 V10 in the E60 M5 and the S65 V8 in the E92 M3. Both motors are basically the same thing but the two extra cylinder and extra liter of displacement in the S85 shows quite well in how the M3 is pulled easily from the 50 and 70 mile per hour rolls. Also, the E60 M5 S85 V10 having an Evolve tune while the M3 does not have a tune makes a huge difference.

Mods for the E60 M5 are Evolve-R tune, RPI scoops, muffler delete, and secondary cat delete. The DCT E92 M3 has RPI scoops and a full Active Autowerke exhaust but no tune. Enjoy the runs below.
