AKA, tires you can pretty much ONLY drive on snow. If the roads clear up, you're going to quickly ruin the studs. Nice showing although, I think many studded tires would do exceptionally well against a regular summer tire. Its just a step down from having chains.

so many people have no idea about using the right tire. In summer and winter alike. I have dunlop winter sport 3d's and theres a blizzard in NY today and I was able to drive home 5 hours after snow fall with some roads being unplowed. And when u do have trouble, you can usually rock out of it because they do grip somewhat...

but compared to blizzacks I had on my Z and 135 the dunlops are not as impressive but still far better than any summer tire. I wonder how DWS do in todays snow... @themyst

DWS do great in light snow when they are brand new, but driving on them year round mine weren't very good their 2nd winter (~20k miles use) so I replaced them and the traction is awesome again. If I got more than a few decent snow storms a year I would buy winters over DWS and run two sets of wheels.

I am thinking of them for the wifes Xi car... they should be great

This is wrong, you are even supposed to run your studded tires 50-100km on asphalt before the winter and snow comes to get the top dry surface of the rubber away.


If you break in your studded tires and done drive to aggressively the studs isn't going nowhere.

Well I've owned a few sets of winter tires with studs myself growing up in the snow. I'm well aware of a break in period, but being a lazy young lad at the time I've ruined more than one set of studs driving on the asphalt for too long. This was 15 years ago as I no longer live in a cold climate and things may have changed.

I've driven a c230 kompressor with the 6sp that had the dws tires in the snow. kleeman supercharger pully , tune, full exhaust, cold air intake were the mods done. it did very well in the snow. we were driving around without any issues so they are a pretty good snow tire for a sporty car IMO.

Personally, I don't get the logic of this comparison, or what's the point, to prove that winter tyres are better than summer tyres in the snow? I think that's something that does not need any kind of explanation..

Trust me ppl are ignorant and stupid any kind of education is good, even in Sweden I can hear ppl saying stuff like "I have 4wd, I dont need winter tires". Traction in a straight line is usually ok with 4wd and summer tires, but while cornering or breaking one need proper tires.

Who would ever measure car performance in a straight line anyways

The 1 series also has not LSD.. Which makes ALL the diffrence for a RWD car in snow.

I use my M3 in the snow, its actually quite good, apart from the suspention which is set up for track usage (negative camber and way too stiff)

The soft rubber that is needed for the winter tires wears quicker than the studs assuming a decent driving style. The soft and sticky rubber characteristics get destroyed in heat, i.e. driving at higher speeds at summer temps. That's why all seasons are not at their best after the first winter. Winter tires should be kept in a cold and dark storage over the summer for the rubber to remain sticky.

Summer tires are useless in the winter, but the RWD Michelin Alpin performance was not too good either. It was still very slow in my books.

This. It doesn't matter how the power from the engine is transferred to the ground. If you can't stop or turn you will be unhappy. AWD or 4WD doesn't help with either of those situations.
