    • Performance Wagon versus Performance SUV - 2013 958 Porsche Cayenne Turbo versus 2013 W212 Mercedes E63 AMG Wagon Performance Package

Here's a fairly interesting matchup pitting a wagon against a sport utility. Which one makes the most sense from a performance standpoint? That is exactly what Road and Track track attempted to find out. The odds are somewhat stacked against the Cayenne Turbo as it already has a higher center of gravity and weighs more than the E63 but on top of that the E63 AMG wagon comes with the Performance Package option boosting power to 550 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.

So the Cayenne carries an additional 635 pounds and has 50 less horses and 74 less pound-feet of torque. The acceleration battle is easily the E63's with a 12.1@118.9 1/4 mile versus the 12.7@108.8 for the Cayenne Turbo. Very fast for an SUV but the E63 is simply ballistic for a wagon.

The extra weight and higher center of gravity equate to a 1:47.09 laptime around the track for the Cayenne Turbo versus 1:44.72 for the E63 Wagon. Again, a night and day difference.

Braking performance is close and the Cayenne actually manages to pull more on the skidpad with .91g versus .89g for the wagon. So the Cayenne Turbo is no slouch but the E63 AMG wagon is simply too much to overcome. Additionally, the E63 AMG has rear wheel drive and not all wheel drive so not exactly 100% fair when attempting to state the wagon makes more sense. That all changes when the E63 AMG gets 4Matic all wheel drive in its facelift though along with more power.

So yes, a performance wagon can definitely replace an SUV and actually makes more sense fro ma performance standpoint. Road and Track agrees, full article below.

Impressive for the wagon though certainly not unexpected.

Here's my best timeslip so far for my 958 with just bypass pipes and filters in +1000 DA. EVOMS tune and mufflers done today and going back Saturday night where trap prep will suck (not the biggest problem for the AWD heavy Cayenne) but we will likely be in -1000 DA range! I'm predicting an 11.6, but we shall see...

11.6 would be a huge change I find that rather optimistic.

Still, that's a healthy slip right there! Time for a tune.

AMG should offer a sleeper package. No badges, no look-at-me body elements like the exhaust pipes etc... That would surprise the $#@! of people. lol

Check out those exhaust pipes man. When i see those, i realize i'm looking at a serious car. Something like the B5 S5 i have in mind. Apart from the little tiny S5 badge on the grill nothing makes you think how fast that car is (was for the time).

Well I mean whatever personally if I'm driving that wagon nobody behind me is going to be seeing those pipes for very long.

You are correct. Debadge that sucker. Nobody would expect anything from a wagon anyway, then just put them on blast in prime time. I love that wagon, while everyone is in the SUV game the E63 is a monster. Cayenne is bad as well. Click here to enlarge

I've always liked the turbo pepper but the facelifted E63 AMG wagon is a seriously tempting car. Total sleeper, amazing looks, seriously quick, MB luxury, and 4 season utility now with the 4matic. What more can you ask from a daily driver?
