    • ESS-Tuning accuses Evolve of using ESS Tunes, potentially dangerous tuning, and BimmerBoost of generating propaganda for Evolve

The e-mails below come to us from a user who switched from ESS to Evolve tuning. This is not uncommon, a lot of people have been making this switch lately and it seems to be making ESS uncomfortable. They have not made many of these claims publicly but you can see how they operate behind the scenes with it essentially boiling down to implying Evolve is not capable of doing their own tuning, their tuning could be dangerous, and that Evolve has to resort to modifying the ESS software.

These accusations as you can see in the forwarded e-mails come from Asbjorn at ESS. Now, Evolve has really been taking over especially in the S85 V10 tuning scene. This seems to have greatly threatened ESS-Tuning. Additionally, ESS goes to length of saying BimmerBoost generates propaganda for Evolve as if BimmerBoost can be held responsible for ESS customer service or individuals choosing to change their tunes. It was not BimmerBoost that forced the user @MisterEm to switch companies and provide his review of the customer service difference between the two and it is not as if he has only discussed his experience here as if held hostage at gunpoint.

It's a bit of shame to see this behavior behind the scenes. It is also a shame ESS seems to be blaming others for their customer service pushing users to other companies. That is not something in BimmerBoost's control.

Regardless, Evolve is making tremendous headway in tuning. The user who switched here seems to be happier with his Evolve tune and was upset with the behavior displayed by Asbjorn at ESS giving the go ahead to post these e-mails. Whether he wants to chime in or not is his business, BimmerBoost will not violate his confidence. What BimmerBoost will do however is expose ridiculous accusations especially when someone is simply happy with their tuning experience using a company other than ESS-Tuning. Perhaps Asbjorn at ESS should focus more on quality customer service and tuning rather than writing nasty, untrue, and accusatory e-mails?

Here is the first e-mail saying Evolve is just using ESS software for supercharged tuning and not their own:

Those who have been following supercharger development have seen Evolve use and develop their own software. Additionally, those that have seen reviews of Evolve software have seen the impressions regarding the quality of the tuning. Accusing Evolve of just using ESS software and essentially not being capable of doing their own software development and having to modify ESS tunes without even seeing the work done is a bit low. For the record, there will be some basic similarities in practically every S54 forced induction setup on the stock DME.

      Second e-mail:

Asbjorn accuses BimmerBoost of stating ESS could not get the user in question's car running right. BimmerBoost can not find any article published where it has done what ESS accuses BimmerBoost of doing. The only article published regarding ESS and Evolve was a user's own words, not those of BimmerBoost, of his experience switching from ESS to Evolve for his tuning. This is quite simply a blatant lie that clearly Asbjorn felt comfortable saying in private but not in public. His mistake to choose to lie and disparage regardless.

Here are the issues this particular customer experienced prompting him to explore other tuning options. Not much different from others who have also experienced similar issues and who have decided to make the switch to Evolve to resolve them:

Here is an e-mail from Asbjorn at ESS to said customer once he got wind of the customer trying other tuning options. The e-mail just directly states that Evolve is tuning using ESS software and not their own and implies Evolve's tune will be dangerous. Asbjorn states that if the timing is changed it "could be fatal' implying that Evolve is not competent in knowing how to adjust the timing on the fuel quality used in the application and also that their tune can cause engine failure over time as if getting a custom Evolve tune is worse than a canned tune:

This is all pretty ridiculous, childish, and petty. People will switch tunes. There is not only one tuner capable of tuning a BMW forced induction setup. Evolve has plenty of cars running well. It is their own quality customer service, tuning, and results that is causing such a changover in various markets most visible in the S85 scene currently. People are happy with Evolve tunes. It's ok to have competition. BimmerBoost will not generate propaganda for anyone and knows Evolve can stand on their own merit which is why they are welcome to engage the userbase here. What BimmerBoost will do however is expose this type of shady behavior behind the scenes. The words you see in the ESS e-mails are Asbjorn's own. Come to your own conclusion.

Over/Under on how long before Evolve gets asked to no longer sponsor M3Post & once a TON of people over there find out why, they migrate to BB?

This is a textbook display of dirty business practices that ESS probably will defend by saying "they're looking out for the customer", when the truth is they're just looking out for their profits & market share. If only someone could share this over on NorthKoreaPost & educate the blind followers

I doubt they are so stupid as to do that. Evolve doesn't create any problems and Jason is happy collecting checks.

But you don't think if ESS is cutting a bigger check they'll put some "pressure" on Jason?? Thing is I could never see Active, VF Engineering or Evolve (even Gintani with all the $#@! they've been through) sending emails like this to an owner who switched to ESS

Even if ESS cut a bigger check than they do it would be completely counter-productive but almost everything the staff does is counter-productive over there so who knows. If ESS could get rid of all their competition by paying Jason off they would have already. For now, they just use their legion of blind fanboys.

If Gintani is still there, Evolve no doubt will be too.

The only thing that could really be done is to convince Gintani, Evolve, VF, and AA to all switch here and drop them. Three of the aforementioned already sponsoring BimmerBoost. It's within the realm of possibility and if I offered as much traffic it would have already happened. None of them are happy with the staff there or how ESS is propped up unfairly and how their fanboys are allowed to crap all over threads/competitors but you have to make $.

True. I saw this coming when i read Evolve is doing what ESS couldn't do in the first place.

Tuners world sucks. No offense to decent tuners, but it's full of shady things going on. Specially in these days. I remember a decade ago on forums i used to read how tuners would treat others with respect, they weren't helping each other i must say but they weren't talking $#@! either.

@Sticky i tried to rep sledge but this was shown.

Seems there is a conflict when using rep and when I try to force a thread read. Thanks, I'll have to have someone take a look at the programming and clean it up.

Once you view the thread though, can you rep normally?

Rep in that thread or in this thread? I repped nafoo in that thread. In this thread, i also repped benzy. But, after refreshing this thread and viewing the other thread, the error is still there. I even didn't try to rep sledge this time after refreshing, but it's there.

Try to rep someone else in this thread. Anyway, let's discuss this error somewhere else. Not the topic of this thread.

Threw a rep at ya as well and you make a great point. As an example many people know the Vette is being built. The company that makes the blower kit did the original tuning and I have a good tuner at the shop thats building the motor/doing the install. One tuner wants to work with the other tune to make sure the car gets the best tune. But they cant agree because they are competing shops, it would be nice to get the best of both worlds but it rarely happens.

Thanks for the rep Click here to enlarge Here's what I don't understand why there's a problem with Evolve tuning ESS' kit, or any other manufacturers at that:
        1. If the vendor (in this situation) cannot make the best tune for your kit, there is a serious problem within your organization
        2. If a 3rd Party re-tunes your kit (Evolve), then the owner needs to be prepared to accept any "problems" that may develop down the road outside of a clear mechanical failure (manifold leaks, blower bracket starts bending, etc)

This isn't anything new for a 3rd Party to tune someone elses product. ProEFI has returned a few HPF M3s, but HPF isn't emailing all of the ProEFI-using HPF M3s saying their S54s are a ticking time bomb because they aren't using the AEM standalone with HPFs tune. There is NO reason to discredit "the competition", especially if someone decides to buy your product at full price & then spend additional funds getting it tuned somewhere else, it's an individual choice & risk they're undertaking.

Bottom line, if ESS finds out that people are buying their kits & getting them retuned and/or their market share is decreasing, they need to look the product and identify where are it's short comings & address them. Sending pissy emails calling into question the products & tuning abilities of another vendor just illustrates that they've lost their footing & have no idea how to make it stop.

Funny How BMW people think that tuning MUST go with their hardware. its great when its all complete, but tell me another platform that doesnt buy hardware from A, but get tuned by B..
