    • Already severely outgunned? Car Magazine claims the new F80 M3 will have 444 horsepower from its turbo inline-6

Bavaria, we have a problem. The new M3 is coming and it isn't packing enough of a punch under the hood. We knew it would have a turbocharged inline-6 but we did not seriously think it would only have another 30 horses on the E9X M3 with its 414 horsepower naturally aspirated V8. The new C63 AMG is rumored to have a twin turbo 4.0 liter V8 and considering the C63 AMG (in Black Series trim) already is putting out more to the wheels than this M3 will be rated at the crank let alone what the new turbo C63 AMG will put out the new M3 is going to get smacked around badly if this is true.

Someone at BMW apparently thinks only another 30 horses is a good idea. The S65 V8 in the E92 M3 offered another 70 horsepower AT THE WHEELS over the E46 M3 it replaced. With Mercedes bringing the heat and Audi set to go to a turbo motor, this does not look like it is going to cut it. 30 more horsepower? Is this a joke?

The only bright side BimmerBoost can see is that the new M3 may be severely underrated just like the F10 M5. Let's assume this is the case and apply what we have all seen with the F10 M5 to the new M3. That would mean 417 wheel horsepower for the new M3 despite its appallingly low crank rating. That would also mean an increase of 67 wheel horsepower over the E92 M3 which is a hell of a lot better than 30 horsepower at the crank.

With the new turbo motors BMW is making a habit of underrating them especially in M trim. The low crank rating likely designed not to insight a horsepower war with Mercedes and Audi which is already going on anyway with Mercedes already raising the stakes in the V8 arena. Regardless, assuming about 420 wheel horsepower (which is a best case scenario with a 444 hp crank rating) BMW is not going to win the raw power battle as they did with the F10 M5 temporarily until Mercedes regains the crown.

BMW M3 fans may be starting to sweat just a bit.

Been saying it since they killed the s85 motor. BMW needs to drop the $#@!ity "green efficient" anal play and bring a real engine back to the platform. I'm talking a NA v10 or higher monster that gets 5 miles / baby soul. I hate merc with a passion but they got the cure for what ales me, more cowbell. Pisses me off to admit but mercs gots bmws number once they figure out how to use that $#@! around corners without instantly balding tires.

        M3 with a 5.8 liter V10, game over. Budget 599 essentially.

Merc is tearing $#@! up while BMW sits around with a green thumb up its ass.

Hopefully it will have more HP, but still just a puny I6 compared to the monster AMG 4.0 TT V8. Which will definitely put out a lot more HP than the I6 with a tune only. It really sucks bad BMW had to ditch that beautiful s65 engine. They should have just made it more efficient, like adding TT's for example, the same thing AMG is doing, not running away from the V8. Unless that I6 has over 3.8 liters, I don't think it will be a match for the AMG motors. And here I was thinking about maybe one day snatching an M car, but not anymore, BMW is truly sucking a big one lately. Oh well....

They didn't even have to mess around with the S65. The M3 would arguably be better with an N63 than this.

Because it's straying from the formula that made the M3 the best all around car in the world for four generations.

it doesnt need more power to keep up though.. it makes up for it in every other aspect.. not just HP..

        oh.. wait.. damn..

There's a difference between racing everything that moves and the context of the M3's competition which is mentioned in this article. I'm not quite sure why you can't figure out the target audience, market, and competitors.

Lets wait until we see the real power figures are, rather than speculate, BMW have a history of underrating their engines. I'm quite impressed with the F30's chassis right now and I'm still pretty keen to order an M3 at this stage.

        but but but.. t

its not the first time the bimmer got outgunned though.. as 40 pages in another thread displayed.. sooo..somehow being down on power now is unacceptable, but ok in the previous generation?

We'll see how good they make this 6 cylinder turbo... honestly it will be difficult to make it much better than the N54. Perhaps a small TT 3.6L V8 that revs higher (say 7500) would have been the answer)... 500 HP / 400 TQwould have been a great goal w a beautiful DCT.

No, they don't. They only have a recent history of it with the turbo motors which was mentioned.

Personally, I think I'm right on with my speculation regarding the output. Plus it's so much damn fun.

Actually this would be the first time EVER the M3 would be outgunned by its competition *IF* it's only 444 crank.

Honestly, not really. We'll see the usual, stronger block, forged internals, better cooling, better heads, higher redline. It's not going to be hard to improve on the N54.

Is there any mention of the cars weight in the article? I'd be interested to see if BMW are culling weight to compensate for the power difference between its competitors.

Such a good question. I have no idea unfortunately. This would be the first M3 to be lighter than than the previous generation if that were the trend but based on the F30 and then looking at the F10 M5 it's not a good sign.

We also may lose 50/50 weight distribution...
