New 1M or M1? BMW considering entry level sedan M car based on the F20 1-Series with an M modified N20 turbo four cylinder

This new front wheel drive 1M thing is not the successor to the current 1M. That will be the M2 and it is supposed to be lighter and will be available as a coupe and a 4 door gran coupe. I hope the M2 does not come with the rumored 4 banger but with a detuned version of the M4 engine.

Why would they give it a detuned version of the M3/M4 six cylinder? The N20 makes way more sense.

I didn't say they would....I said I hoped. The only reason it makes sense is so it doesn't step on the M3/M4's toes.

And because the N20 will offer better efficiency, be lighter, and also compete directly with Audi and Mercedes in the segment.

I meant putting a v8 in the e92 chassis was to late IMO, it should have been in the e46, whatever v8 that would have been. Also BMW only sold 10 road going v8 e46 m3's, at ridiculous pricing....


I agree about the sound, I want the new m to sound good but I doubt it will sound as good as the s65, not even close

We will see but how will BMW justify an M2 with a 4 banger while the 235 and M235 being sold at the same time with a 6?

The V8 could have come earlier in "realistic" production form. We knew it was coming the whole time but the reason it came later was because it was based on the S85. So they went S85 to S65 instead of S65 to S85 which makes more sense.

If the E60 M5 came earlier we would have seen the V8 earlier. But BMW clearly already felt in 2001 the car could use a V8. We didn't get it until 2008 though.

The N55 sounds better than the N54. I noticed it when I got my 1M and told my wife that her 535 sounded better. Now I am not talking exhaust but the actual engine itself. The N55 has an S65 like grunt to it as you can hear in that Chris Harris review of the M135.

I haven't driven or paid close attention to a n55 car.... That's good news!

Hmm the situation is not really comparable, as the E30 M3 was the first of its kind and invented the "affordable sports car" segment in its class, just lke the first VW Golf GTI did in 1976 in the compact class.

Fairly comparable as this would be BMW's affordable sports car so you made my point for me. Additionally, a higher strung 4 cylinder made by M makes more sense in this than just giving it the same motor already in the car and calling it a day. Isn't that what they did with the E30 to great success?

Well the E30 M3 didn't have real competitors. I was implying that a +/- 300bhp M2 now not only competes against the M3/M4, but also against a myriad of cars like Golf R, Megane RS, Audi RS3, Focus RS, Astra GTC etc. What would make the M2 stand out against the competition (and justifiy the most probably higher price tag): 1. RWD and 2. a six-cylinder engine.

Ok so we have established this vehicles competitors will not have six cylinders so isn't that all the more reason the tweaked N20 makes sense? This car won't compete against the M3. Giving it RWD and a six cylinder just makes it basically another M3. They should do what Mercedes and Audi are doing and it looks like they are.

The M2 is rear wheel drive. If they do put a reworked N20 in it they better do something magical to it. I was given an F30 as a loaner when my car was getting an oil change a couple of weeks ago and hated it. The gas mileage was cool though....

Was the S14 not magical? Any powerplant massaged by M is going to special. Hence why the 1M was not.

We will see what they do with this 2 Series. I don't like the front wheel drive rumors.

I don't know when these front wheel drive rumors come from but the M2 will be rear. Are they talking about the M car for their new front wheel drive brand?

I don't think they have said anything about a front wheel drive M car but that would be a tragedy. The M2/M1 whatever it is should be RWD.

4cyl? So less power (potential at least) than the n55? Bmw can't be that stupid

but what else can they do with the m3 being a turbo 6?

bmw m has really screwed themselves here, their only real choice is to make a car outright faster than their m3... Or fall behind..

Does an EVO really have much less power potential than a 335 because it's a four cylinder? Fastest ones are much faster than the fastest 335's. Why discount something just because it is a four cylinder? This may be way more fun to drive.
