• BMW unveils 1.5 liter TwinPower 3 cylinder turbo motor, essentially half an inline-6 and up to 221 horsepower - Sound video

This turbo 3-cylinder motor will be featured in various models in the BMW lineup for some time to come. Most recently it was featured in the BMW Concept Active Tourer and will be a staple of the "i" model lineup. The motor features a turbocharger, direct injection, and Valvetronic. Each cylinder has a displacement of 500cc's. It can be viewed as basically half an N55 turbo motor which is currently powering the 335, 535, etc.

Outputs will range from 121 to 221 horses depending on application. Expect the highest output for a model such as the i8. The motor is currently used in the F20 and a sound clip of the engine note is below. It is going to make for a very interesting tuner platform seeing what tuners can get out of the tiny motor but obviously is not a powerhouse.

This would make an awesome daily at something between 170-200hp in a coupe 1 series and keeping it economical

I don't think so, not with the current lineup. Maybe they will change things.
