I had a run once against a M3. We launched from a stop. I had completely bald P0's on my non-P31 C63. The M3 had a car full of passengers. I couldn't fuc%ing launch my car because I couldn't get grip for what felt like forever. The M3 was far ahead and I felt like I could have closed some of the gap, but I didn't want to take it into high speeds. I felt so restricted, like Usain Bolt with a Fiat 500 strapped to his leg! I could literally feel the glee of the M3 driver as we made brief eye contact down the road. I'm still pissed.

M5 vs. M3. One of the great debates of our time that has the potential to turn any BMW message board into a full blown e-riot. When the DCT M3 first came out many M5 owners refused to believe the M3 could keep up with it. Well, reality is it definitely can especially from down low where the lower weight and dual clutch transmission help versus the more powerful (and heavier) M5.

In the video we see in the runs from a roll that whomever gets the jump holds their lead. Now, the M5 has two passengers so without the passengers we would expect it to start a slow and steady pull versus the M3 the longer the race would go. From a stop however the M3 shows the advantage the DCT transmission has launching versus the M5's SMG managing to beat it.

Mods on the M5 are an Evolve R Tune and RPI Scoops. The M3 has RPI scoops, BMW Performance Exhaust, and a Gintani X-Pipe with high flow cats. Enjoy the race and we hope to see a rematch once the M3 gets a tune (and the M5 ditches the passengers).

Great raspy sound from that M3, but somehow the S85B50 will always be one of the best BMW engines EVER in my mind.. The sound, power delivery and character are just outstanding for a saloon, a true supercar engine.... with supercar fuel consumption..

God I miss my E60M5...

Aren't the Gintani X-pipe HFC's after the primary cats in place of the secondaries? Should throw a CEL then - don't see one in the video. Unless he is using a Delete-R.

1. S70/2: How can it not be? Only racing production V12 made. Not 100% made by M, but who else?
2. S85B50: While I do prefer the sound of a nice tuned S65, this spawned it and it is a V10...
3. S65B40: Light, revs fluidly, very smooth power curve.
4. S54B32: Torquey, yet revs... after supplier issues fixed, has an unbreakable bottom end.
5. M88/1: Has to be in this list - the daddy of them all...

Almost made it: S62B50 - great top end, torquey, sounded great and powered the Z8. I wanted to add in a S50B32 but one must make sacrifices.

I completely agree with your list other than your opinion pertaining to the sound difference between the S85/S65. I could honestly listen to a modded E9x M3 scream all day long, but for me the S85 F1 exhaust pitch is just unstoppable.

I haven't gone a single day without multiple compliments since my muffler delete..

i love the v10.

hearing a motor rev in nuetral does nothing for me though, it doesnt sound the same. but when you do it under load, a take off or flyby, it sounds amazing

That does sound amazing! I really have a tough time deciding which one I like between the two. I will say that if I had to choose two motors from the S85, the S65 and the M156, I would take the S85 and M156. I just love the rawness of a S65, the S85 however is just so smooth and racy. Now I am confused, gah!

Your list would be similar to mine but I will do something a little more in depth.

Don't disagree with your choices necessarily it's a good list.

Indeed... but they sound very different. Which is why I put them both on my list. Also b/c the S65 is a very compact and light V8 that never seems to run out of revs (and can fit into smaller chassis' such as a Z4MC - my dream project).

List is good, maybe also my favorite list. The S54B32 in CSL form, the S14B25 EVO motor needs to be there, but you kinda cover it with the M88/1, but there are so many worty motors You almost cover the S50B3X Motors by having the S70/2


Not sure I agree that the S62B50 is a great engine, arguable the least HP pr liter in any late model S-Motor. Great torque, but 400hp from 5L..

Thanks. The S62 just sounds amazing and has great torque. Probably why //M used a 4.9ltr motor. I don't think they were looking for a high revving screamer. Of course that all changed with the S85... bless that motor. On that note, until recent revisions, the Panamera V8 made similar power as a S62.

Porsche was not trying to push that motor. The S62 is pretty good but not BMW's best.

Panamera motor is a 4.5L isn't it?
