      Autobild is a German magazine that is well respected in Europe. We have to scratch our heads at their conclusion here though picking the M6 in first place and putting the Jaguar XKR-S in a tie for second with the new SL63 AMG. The SL beats the M6 by over a second on the roadcourse and demolishes the XKR-S by more than two seconds. The Mercedes is also the quickest accelerating car of the three. All the performance numbers are in the favor of the SL including braking.

      So why does the SL lose? Because it gets penalized for its price and daily usability compared to the M6. Well, it is not cheap but it is not supposed to be. Not like the M6 is a value in of itself. Additionally, the M6 will have more usability because it is based on a four seater. The SL needs to store its hard top in the trunk so naturally with the roof down it will not have as much space as the M6. Why does the SL not get points for being significantly lighter than the M6 despite its folding hardtop?

      We have to disagree strongly with Autobild here. The car we would choose from a performance standpoint is the SL. The M6 may have more room in the trunk which is fine for the owner who can fill it with boxes of tissues to dry his tears as the SL leaves him in the dust where it matters.

        I know a little German. It seems that the M6 is the better handling car than the SL, and feels better to drive. I think it's a fair result. That Benz is ridiculously expensive. 50,000 euros is ALOT! Not to mention it's the ugliest SL ever.

        At the end i would choose the Jag over the others. It's best looking by far and is classy.

        The M6 isn't the better handling car it just seems they liked how it felt better.

        Agreed, IMO the 1st (Gullwing) + 5th generation SLs are the only good looking ones.

        Would be nice if BMW made another Z8-ish car that 'd be a more of a direct competitor to the SL + XKR though -- Need an authentic 2 door, M powered engine, 2-seat roadster

        Amazes me BMW would rather produce crap like the 5 GT than something like a Z8.

        Read the last page. It says the SL has too light steering and intense rear axle and is too computer assisted.
        It also said despite the heavy weight, the M6 is nicely balanced and has a steering with real feel.

        No, nothing in common with German.

        And yes, exactly, they liked the feel of the M6 but the SL is the better handling car.

        It's sad that the brand is getting diluted by unnecessary cars & lack of segregation between M + non-M cars with the M-package nonsense. If it was up to me, the Sport Package would be the top of the line of the non-Ms (335is okay) & then the M -- That's it

        I would like to see the "is" moniker get back its luster but it seems it is all about using M to move product.

        It's getting like Ferrari (not in a good way). There's the cars (which are awesome) and then Ferrari shoes, laptops, cologne, toilet paper & other meaningless $#@! with the prancing horse slapped on it

        Sticky you're scaring me. Haven't you always said you'd rather have a car that you like the "feel of" rather than something like a GTR that has no heart, no soul, and is akin to driving a robot or vacuum cleaner...but appreantly handles like it's on rails...??

        I agree with you just defending the point that the SL is the better handling car despite the M6 offering more feel.

        The SL was penalized unfairly for being a premium 2 seater in this review.

        i would pick the XKR-s over the bimmer and the AMG, looking good is more important than the slight performance disadvantages with this kind of money

        I would say the SL is the most exclusive and best performing which is the most important in this range. IMO it's the best car of the bunch.
