• Yet another BMW loss? Motortrend picks the B8 Audi S4 over the F30 BMW 335i

This is becoming a disturbing pattern although it sure is looking good for Audi. Just earlier this month Car and Driver picked the S6 over the new M5. Insideline also gave a scathing review of the new 640i GranCoupe. Now MotorTrend joins the fray picking the Audi S4 over the new 335i. The Audi significantly outperforms the 335i running 12's in the 1/4 mile stock with a 12.9@108.7. The 335i runs a 13.5@103.9. When is the last time BMW's direct competitor for an Audi model lagged this far behind? We all grew accustomed over the past couple decades to it being the reverse.

It is not just the acceleration that is the issue, the braking performance of the BMW is very poor in comparison to the S4. 131 feet versus 108 to stop from 60? That is a rather large difference.

Handling performance also was in the S4's favor pulling .91g's and a 25.6 seconds around their figure 8. The 335i took 26.7 seconds around the figure 8 managing .86g's. The all seasons no doubt hurt it a bit but this does not change the fact the Audi crushed it here by over a second.

It isn't even the performance necessarily but the steering is muted on the 3 Series, it is more expensive than the Audi, gets worse fuel economy, and the electronics get in the way. MotorTrend says this is odd and to us it is almost like the twilight zone.

BMW is falling off whether fans want to admit it or not. The new 328i raised the bar on the low end but in the mid-range of the lineup BMW is not innovating in the way they did when the 335i was first introduced. Perhaps the way to look at it is simply that Audi is getting much better. We wish BMW would get out of their slump already since changing over to the turbo motors. Clearly some of the magic is gone. The question is, will they get it back?

Another disappointment from BMW : . If we take in consideration it's a "old" S4 , since a few months ago the facelift was launched...

I didn't watch the vid but didn't the e90 335 beat the s4 in comparos? And everything I have read so far has the new 3 better than the old...but now the new 3 can't beat the old s4? Am I missing something?

The new 335i seems to be slower than the 335i they reviewed in late 06.

Isn't the new one lighter with better aero? Is it n54 vs n55 causing it to be slower?

I think the models BMW was giving reviewers to test out back in 06 were heavily power underrated. Think I read that somewhere but not 100% sure. Some where putting down 285whp if I remember.

They state that in the review , they miss some of the E90 caracteristhics. E90 chassis with F30 body style and interior would have been a great succes. Hope the M3 will get hydraulic steering afterall

I always expect a bit more with each successive generation/platform update. Not only do we not get more with the F30 335i, it seems the performance is taking a step or two backwards. Obvious to us for some time now that the N54 is a better performer than the N55, but I also keep hearing that BMW's current models are losing ground in the steering, handling, and braking department...areas BMW used to accel in.

Exactly. It isn't about muscle but what about happened to the complete package? Steering worse than Audi? Braking and handling as well? WTF is going on?

WTF... I'm glad I decided on getting my N54 E92 and not waiting on the F30. The 3 series was the car to beat for the longest time, it looks like the competition finally did it. Your move BMW...

They changed it into a more luxurious car killing all of its driveability qualities. Is it sad? yes Does BMW give a damn? no, people generally buy $#@! like cinnammon buns

What has Mercedes been doing all along? creating M157s for $#@!s sake. Bmw is becoming pathethic.

So true. BMW's shift to more "greener not eco friendly" plans made it easy for me to decide against getting the future M3 and get either the current M3 or an C63 AMG

Read a review of the F30 335i in a french mag. Bottom line is: It's a great car, but you have to take it as a "super-saloon". Not a sports car.

        Things have definitely changed...

We can only hope the dedicted Coupe 4 series will be set up alot sportier by BMW.

How will it be sportier when it will just be the F30 platform with 2 doors?

BMW is truly going to $#@!. Did they get all new leadership or something? Their cars are no longer exciting. So sad...

Fix for stock 335i F30... bump power output by 30 HP, stiffen the suspension a tad like the 2011s, Remove one gear from the autobox (people should see where I am going with this) and give us back our beloved hydraulic steering. Car will drive like old one but look and feel new.

This vid is bull$#@! - the S4 has summer tires and the 335 has all-seasons. Any comparison having to do with performance is moot.
