• BMW takes home four 2012 International Engine of the Year Awards - N18, N20, N54, and S65 awarded

      BMW's dominance at the International Engine of the Year awards continues. No real surprise considering BMW is the most awarded manufacturer in the history of the competition now with 59 awards making for more than double that of the second place. The BMW S65 V8 wins its fifth straight award and likely its last with the M3 soon to end production. What makes this victory impressive is that the motor beat out the McLaren MP4-12 3.8 liter V8 as well as the new Porsche 3.8 liter direct injenction flat-6 in the new 991 Carrera S.

      The BMW N54 gets its 6th straight victory in the 2.5 to 3.0 liter class which likely will be its last award as well with the move to the N55 in most models. The only other BMW motor to win six straight times is the S54 from the E46 M3.

      In exciting news the new N20 turbo four cylinder took a well deserved victory in the hotly contested 1.8 to 2.0 liter category. It replaces the previous winner which was also a BMW motor, the N47 diesel.

      The N18 1.6 liter turbo four cylinder from Mini wins the 1.4 liter to 1.8 liter category for the second straight year. It's predecessor also won from 2007-2010.

      Great work by BMW who continues to show everyone it is the world's best engine builder without equal. We just hope with the naturally aspirated motors exiting the competition BMW is still able to dominate the way they have with the competition all adopting similar turbocharged and direct injected styles.

        So I still dont understand how the N54 keeps winning when the N55 is available on almost every car. Stock for Stock, the moors are identical and have identical hp/tq outputs. Are people that brainwashed into believing twin is better than single or what?

        The N54 does put out a little more stock for stock especially with the is models.

        The N55 has less lag, but is not creating as much power stock for stock.

        I am assuming that this power difference is nil when the engine/ecu is modified though. I think they are both awesome engines stock or not.

        They are both great but it seems the N54 gets preferential treatment due to still being in production as well as being first.

        I think as far as the N54 goes, they are talking about the Z4is and 1M which is a very conservative 335hp.

        And I don't think any stock N55 matches the 1M.

        I don't really know that much about the N55 or care. My wife won't let me mod hers so....but I think the n55 with ppk is 320? I will admit for some reason the n55 engine has a deeper more raspy sound almost like a toned down S65 compared to the N54. Maybe my exhaust is just louder and can't hear the engine as well. Who knows.

        Sticky are you sure about N18? I think it's called BMW-PSA Prince Engine and is based on N13.

        I'm pretty sure:

        In 2011 BMW released turbo charged 1.6 Prince engine N13B16,[7] based on Mini Cooper S (N18) engine. Oil filter housing is redesigned to allow longitudinal engine mounting.
