• 2012 328i N20 Stage I beta tune dyno testing from Burger Motorsports (BMS) - +~30 wheel horsepower so far on 91 octane

Took a few hours today to do some N20 dyno testing and tuning. For those that have been living under a rock for the past few months the N20 is a 2.0L 4 cylinder turbo and motors replaces the N52 motor used in the 328i, among other cars. We only have around 200 miles on the car but so far first impressions are very positive. Compared to the previous 328i N52 motor the N20 is much more responsive and has excellent low end torque characteristics. In addition it has much more power to redline. It also delivers better fuel economy. In short, it really blows the N52 away in all categories. Below is an N52 vs. N20 dyno comparison.

With regard to tuning BMW definitely left some room for improvement with the N20. Unfortunately, they changed around the DME so none of the CAN stuff we've developed for the N54 and N55 motors is compatible. It's back to square one there.

But doing the tuning on a JB3 platform using an OBDII logger for advance and throttle, and the dyno for AFR and output, we were able to make some nice tuning improvements. I still think there is another easy 10hp in there with more work. But very pleased at the results so far. On the road the tuning feels much more responsive and almost as fast as an OEM 335i now.

We'll continue working on the software end and expect to have an N20 Stage1 BETA system ready in the near future.

It's on the other forum. Didn't want to post a link and don't have access to it now (work computer blocks the other forum HAHA).

Does anyone know if the N20 feels anything like the VW TSI 2.0 turbo? That is a great engine and a great way to compare, how does it compare with power delivery?

That 2.0 TSI motor stock kind of sucks... I did quite a few test drives in a Gti and had to admit that was one of the weakest turbo cars that I have ever driven. The Mazdaspeed3 2.3L Disi turbo on the otherhand blew the doors off the VW and and I guarantee blows the doors of the N20.

Drive it compared to an n52 and you will like it much more.

Any motor feels more powerful than the N52.
