      Here it is folks, what many said could not be done. For those keeping score, this marks the third breakthrough by Weistec Engineering (first being the M156 supercharger and second being CARB certification). The Mercedes 722.9 transmission is used in a variety of vehicles and made its debut in 2004. Tuners have struggled to upgrade it with some saying it was impossible due to electronic complications but parts are now available to take the transmission up to the 1000 pound-foot of torque handling range.

      The torque converter obviously does not apply to those with the MCT but the valve body, tcu, and other parts do. There will be more vehicles supported than just what is listed below.

      The transmission receives upgraded clutch packs, new gaskets and seals, filter, pump, and associated hardware. This also includes the valve body and TCU upgrade which can be purchased separately. Pricing? $5,489

      722.9 Valve Body and TCU Upgrade


      This is the first and only valve body upgrade for the 722.9 transmission. This part improves the way the transmission shifts and increases line pressure. The changes in the TCU are made to compliment the hardware and make sure it all works correctly. With the increased pressure and software to compliment it this prevents the clutches from slipping. Turnaround time of 3 days, your parts must be used.

      722.9 Torque Converter

      This is the first and only upgraded torque converter for the 722.9 transmission. A lot of firsts coming from Weistec who continues to work their magic on Mercedes platforms.

      This does feature a higher stall of 2500 rpm which should help launches at the track considerably. Weistec stated that in their testing 60 foots dropped around two tenths which will have a large impact on a 1/4 mile elapsed time. It will also support over 1000 horsepower.

        So for about 10k you get a fully built transmission....sounds pretty reasonable to me for an AMG and the 3 day turnaround time is pretty impressive, too. Nice job Wesitec. Bet there are lots of guys out there who claimed to be able to tune the TCU who are scratching their heads right about now lol.

        But come on, 3K for a TC. I had a custom one made back in the 80's from B&M for only 800 bucks. And it was certainly higher than 2500Click here to enlarge

        It seems that a couple of people plan on shipping their transmissions to Weistec for these upgrades. Is this the only option we have? Can't a competent transmission shop perform these upgrades? Can the torque converter be installed for those who are interested in a higher stall only and are not making the kind of power that Keith, Jim and Earl are making?

        My main interest is the torque converter for now. Eventually I would like to add the rest of the trans upgrades if/when I'm ready for a blower.

        As stated the valve body and TCU upgrade requires your hardware. You can probably just have the other parts installed.

        Nobody else has a torque converter for this trans...

        Knowing whats at stake I wouldn't want anyone doing the work except Weistec.

        My original question should have been clearer. Do I need to send my trans to Weistec for the valve body/tcu upgrade or can my stock valve body be removed and sent to them instead?

        I believe the valve body can be removed and sent in.

        Understood.

        I'm trying to minimize downtime if I can, since the vehicle is my daily driver. Honestly, pulling the trans out and shipping it cross crounty is not an option for me. I have a local shop that works stricly on benzes and can do the work.

        The Answer is No. Tuning is the major barrier in this situation. Nobody has been able to mess with the TCU of these cars. Weistec are the only ones. Your buddy seems to be tuning "the whole driveline for the 63 AMG", lets see if he can do something about itClick here to enlarge

        Definitely not but it is valid to point out how past transmission tuning claims were overblown. As well as statements that this could not be done.

        Understood. Let him start another thread about it.

        I'm just trying to get questions answered before I take the plunge. SLS AMG states it's a tuning issue and only Weistec can do the work, you state otherwise.

        I'm back to square one. Can Weistec answer some of these questions?
